Fishing on a running stream???
I tried fishing this morning near my place on a running stream and I heard some slurping on top of the water tried my wide eye popper but they are not biting. I did'nt have my tackle box with me just checking some of my area near my place. What's the best lure I can use on this running river/stream?

Depends on if it is rocky or sandy. Also, at how many knots would you guess this water is moving? O h yeah the depth would come into factor as well.
|
it's rocky alright but about the knots I'm not familiar with that. I think it's 4 to 5ft in depth.

If I had to guess, I would guess Nonquit. On the full drop about 4 to 5 knots

On a river I fish I like to use weighted rubber so my lure gets down into the current. I usually use fin-s fish on a jighead or storms.

Same with me. But I use Bassassasins. Cast slightly up stream all the way to the other side. Keep your rod tip up and tension on the line so you don't snag. Work the opposite bank with a slight jig bouncing your lure off of the bottom. Continue this until the current pulls your lure almost back to the bank you are standing on. Then a slow retrieve with a few jerks here and there working your lure up the side of the river that you are standing. The trick is to have steep banks and to watch the snags.

I tried the rubber eel and shad last night but I think there are blues lurkin around chew up both my rubber eel and my shad storm in half. They are small schoolies jumpin around the way I see it like 18" to 24".

If they are methodically feeding on top in a river like that you have to treat them like fly fishing dry flys for trout (if it is the fish that are on top that youre trying to catch). When they feed on top like that they can be pretty selective. Make sure the fly is right on top and match the size of fly to the bait.
With spinning try what everyone else suggested and maybe try a teaser.... |
