Pencil popper help needed !
Hi Guys,
I'm going to try my first attempt at some 2 oz pencil poppers. Can you guys give me some insight into whether you weight them or not. If you do weigh them can you tell me where on the plug is the best location and how much weight your using. Thanks Wannabe wood turning sharpie |
Weight them at the tail. You want a pencil popper to float almost vertically at rest.
Turn your plug bodies, then paint and seal them. Before you wire them, fill a tank with salt water and see how they float. Add whatever weight you need to have them float arse down with the tip of the nose sticking up out of the water. |
Yep, what Mike said. Also, taper the body of the plug so that it is fattest toward the tail. Look at your favorite pencil to get an idea of the shape. I like AYC for my pencils, though other woods will work good too. I would stay away from the harder woods (birch, maple, etc.) for pencils.

hello
Hi Jigman,
Nice meeting you at the Cape View. Thanks for the insight guys |
You can also adjust the weight in the tail depending on how you want the pencil to work. I weight the tail on some so that they sit vertical with about half the plug above the suface (these I work like a traditonal pecil, basically keeping the plug in one samll area and whipping the water to a froth). Others I weight the tail less and use the like a surface cruiser. As Andrew stated AYC is a good wood for this plug, I have also used red cedar but you have to use more lead. I put the lead on the through wire so it is centered. SHow us pics when your done.
