allstar 1266-2?
 

So i've done some research and I think that I'm going to get a custom built on an all star 1266-2 blank this winter for using around the rocks. I'm planning on matching it with a 706z (already have the reel) with 30 lb fire line. I'm looking to use it to fish mostly 2-3.5 oz lures and I want something that will fish that weight very comfortably but also be able to go alittle higher and lower, say around 1.5 oz (bomber magnum long a) in a pinch but not necessarily load up well with that weight. I have a 1145-2 (1-3 oz) that I love (but doesn't really have the backbone that I want in the rocks) and a lamiglass surf and jetty factory rod (3-8 oz) and the 1266-2 seems like it will fit the void that I have perfectly.

I just wanted to get some opinions from people who know alot more about this than me about whether I've come to the right conclusion. I also heard that some of the all-star blanks, such as the 1145-2, have had problems and was wondering if anyone has had problems with the 1266-2. Thanks for any replies and sorry about the wordy post.

I have a 1266/2 spinning rod that Mike CC wrapped a couple of years ago. It throws 1-5/8 oz Gibbs darters very well. Bombers don't have the same aerodynamics, tho.

It has a lot of backbone.

From your description , it sounds like the 1267/2 would be better for you.

I have the 1266/2 wrapped conventional by mikecc. I can throw a big bomber fairly well with no wind. I use it mainly for throwing jigs and it is great for that.

Rod has a pretty fast action and plenty of backbone.

The Breakaway rod model LDFS 106-2mh is made from the All-star blank 1266-2. The Breakaway rod is a excellent rod complete with guides, etc. and made of good quality of which the price could not be matched if it was custom built with the same hardware, according to a reliable well known rod builder.

I matched this rod with the Shimano Stratic 8000.

I can load up a 3.5 oz. polaris popper as well as a 2 oz jig with no problem.

The bombers and a-salts are light weight and just don't have the aerodynamics as Mike P stated but what do you expect for only about 1 oz. distributed along 5-7 inches of plastic.

Plenty of backbone.
Note: The 1267-2 is a "h" rod.

What's an "h" rod?

I think just H as in heavy...medium, medium heavy, heavy, extra heavy, ultra heavy etc...

I was thinking that the 1267-2 with a rating of 2-6 was probably pretty close to the lami that I already have that is rated 3-8 based on people always saying that the lamis tend to be overrated. Also, do you think that the 1267 would be better because of the backbone for handling fish or because it will handle the weight range that I’m looking for better. Thanks for any input.

The Breakaway which I previously spoke of will load up a 2 oz. well excluding the plugs which are not aerodynamic and I would think by process of elimination that is to say that having a 1266-2 and "not" having a 1267-2 or experience with a 1267-2 that the low end loading weight would be increased beyond your required 2 oz min limit.
There may be someone that actually has a 1267-2 that can give you there experience with this rod.

Despite the 7 in the name , the 1267 actually has a lower weight capacity than the 1266. It also has a much more moderate action. I would rate the 1267 at 1.5 to 4 OZ. The catalog ratings are seldom correct. They both have enough backbone to land Moby #^&#^&#^&#^&.

Power is best described as the amount of energy or force needed to get a rod blank to bend. All Star uses a Power Rating System to rate it's rods:

(((The "7" is greater then "6" therefore indicating that a greater force is needed to flex the rod to the action of the rod of which both are rated as Mod-Fast. The differences are shown above. IMO, you would expend more of your energy to flex the rod to it's rated capacity unless you want to throw 6 oz. as the 1267-2 allows)))

I love Allstar blanks. I recommend them all the time. However , I don't care what Allstar's catalog says. Like most manufacturers catalogs , they don't always reflect reality.

Look at the Allstar 1265. The catalog says a 1265 is rated to 1.5 max. In fact , its about the best 2 OZ rod anywhere by any manufacturer. If you went by their specs , you'd never even try it at 2 to 3OZ where it shines.

Forget the catalogs. Build them and fish them yourself , that's how you get to know your rods and rod blanks.

I've got a 1266 that was wrapped by Mike at M&Ds and it is sweet. Wrapped conventional and will throw a 7/8 oz bomber.:kewl:

I believe that the Allstar line being discussed has been discontinued....

It has them funny looking guides on it. You know, the great big ones. I think it was built for one of those reels that hangs from the rod instead of sitting on top like it oughtta. :buds:

wow, blast from the past - when i used to like faster action rods. almost all gsb series for me nowadays.

i picked up at 1266-2 and 1267-2. that's why the bump. To remember the ratings and read a little about them.

It's a stiff rod George, gonna take some getting used to, but it works a pencil nicely. :wave:

I've built a couple of these. The butt seems to have loads of power in it. Makes a nice bait rod too.

I've done the opposite. I can't stand those noodles any more. Everything I use now is medium/fast.
