new at it could someone tell what type of wooden dowels you use . what kind of wood and hardness.

It all depends on what ya want to make. I like birch for needles. Hard maple for darters. And AYC or basswood for swimmers and pencils. Welcome and have fun.:)

Watch the generic dowels they sell at hardware stores. They work great, but seem to vary a lot in density...
