Line Lay Patterns on Spool for Distance
 

Just curious about this. I use a few different types of spinning reels. I know the SHAPE of a spool influences casting distance but also how the line is laid upon the spool when reeled in. My vote for a good system is that of the "older" models of Daiwa SS2600. The line is laid in 5 degree wraps and this reels casts amazingly. The spool is a good shape but I feel the line lay system really helps. My Penn 704 and 706 lay line kind of haphazardly.

Any opinions on your favorite reel in terms of how the line is wrapped on the spool?

Would make sense. With the deep spools on the Z's there's probably more chance the line will form valleys that a wrap could fall into and stick...I've noticed this on my VS.

Do you find the VS wraps better than the 704/6, or is it the same because the spool is narrow on all of them?

It's better than the 706 I had, although I didn't use the Z for that long so I can't say with authority...

Thanks! I've been learning this year on both the 704 and 705. I get almost zero knots with the 706 and the bail catches the line better but when slack, the line comes off the roller which could be a pain. The 704 is ok but it gets stuck on hte bail arm often and I get more "wind" knots for some reason.
Maybe over the winter I will try a VS 250!

Whats nice about the Daiwa SS2600 is I could get a decent amount of braid on it. In the past I used 17lb mono and it really didnt hold much at all. I just hope the drag would hold out!

A great reel, but not made in larger sizes unfortunately is the Abu Suveran, Made in Sweden. Strong, kind of heavy but toooo small!:)

My 250 and 200 both lay line in a "V" shape.

The 706 has peaks and valleys and the 704 is even worse.

Been using the Daiwa Saltiga Z5000 for a few days now. The reel wraps the line as if it were put on by machine - perfect. No doubt about it, I've got a drastic improvement in distance.

i think the diameter of the line your fishing makes more of a diffrence than line lay

Using: the same rod and braid.

Rod: Breakaway LDFS 100H
Braid: 65# test Whiplash ( 150 yards - top shot)
Reels: VS 250 and Daiwa Saltiga Z5000

The Daiwa gets AT LEAST 50% more distance than the VS does. Gotta be the size/shape of the spool and the line wrap.

ok good line lay helps then:laughs: :laughs: :laughs: a longer spool helps with distance thats why the guys down on the outerbanks use them down there if your not casting far your not catching fish

Amazing! I guess the VS is built WELL but still uses OLD technology.

Ok, now we need to make a hybrid reel. Penn price, VS waterproofness(a word?), with a Daiwa Long-Cast Spool. Now we are talking!

Funny thing is, the more I learn about reels, the more difficult it is to decide which one I want. There are so many pros and cons. Whewww!

Does the Saltiga seize at all if a wave throws sand on it or does it have the same features as the VS?

Yeah I think the Saltiga is the Ultimate. Lots of $$$$$$ though.

Those of you that have experience with Saltiga's, would you say they can handle anything that a VS can? For example, no siezing if it gets hit with sand etc.

Can a Saltiga be serviced at a typical Daiwa service center/tackle shop?

What size Saltiga would be equivalent to a VS 250?

BTW - yes, they certainly are BIG $$. I've been using mine for one week now ( did extensive searches/research before buying - read everything) - I'll be buying another one today. They're THAT good !!!

Would you know what size Saltiga would match up to a 10 or 11 foot rod? Lets say a GSB 120 1M or 132 1M? Thanks.

I'm using the Z5000 reel with the 5000GT spool on a 10' Breakaway. But I wouldn't recommend that set up for anything other than jigging the canal because that's all I do.
