How to fix: MMTASK caused a general ...

help.

anyone know the best way to fix an error that reads :

MMTASK CAUSED A GENERAL PROTECTION FAULT IN MODULE MMSYSTEM DLL @. 00004:00000502

This error happens when I've got 3 or more windows open, then blue screen of death causes a restart.

Type Sytem?

Speed? Mem?

Recent software installs?

Patches?

Latest Spyware? Download and run webroot.com spysweeper and lavasoft.de Ad-Aware - be sure to get the latest definitions when prompted

Current Ant-Virus? Definitions in last 4 days?

This will be my monday project, I'm supporting two DR's for work this weekend (more with less at my company :af: ) , so I can't risk losing my pc until then.

What OS? Win98 2nd edition 4.10.222A

Type Sytem? HP Pavillion

Speed? Pentium III

Mem? 128MB

Recent software installs? Kids games

Patches? none that I know of. (unless the 4.10.22a is one?)

Current Ant-Virus? much like the boat insurance I had, none.

You can try to download and install the stuff I listed up top but you seriously will have PC death running how you are running - not if but just a matter of how soon...

The only way to complete secure a PC and certainly a windows PC is to disconnect it from any network, phone line, and permanatly remove all removeable media.... Matter of fact, disconnect the power cord too :hihi:

Sounds like you've had some general system corruption, and the best way IMHO is to reinstall. BTW, Windows98 is famous for these kind of errors.
