Dumbfounded?
Hello everyone! maybe you guys can explain to me why I had such an unusual time the other night? I was fishing a protected Bay in my Kyak, starting out at dusk, picking up a few small stripes on a falling tide. I saw lots of bait going out, following the tide, with some breaks in the surface now and then. I didn't catch a lot of fish? I was using small shads matching the size bait I saw. This has always worked for me in the past. Darkness came and I drifted with the tide heading home. The bay drains quickly with water depths in the 2 to 6 ft. range, then it happened! I was drifting over a large school of fish holding in the current, fish were rolling on the surface, I anchored and started casting every thing in my bag!, Shads, Poppers, Metals, and Swimmers! no luck ? I could feel the strippers hitting my line, no takes. I pulled up the anchor and started drifting again and as I drifted I was bumping into fish with the Kyak! This was exceptionally frusting! Some of these fish were Large! Any Ideas ? My guess is they were waiting till more darkness to enter the flats to begin feeding or maybee there was a worm hatch ???

RE:Dumbfounded?
Some days they just won't hit no matter what you have. Did you see if they were hitting the bait that was there?
Bill, are there worm hatches this late??? Isn't the moon wrong for a worm hatch?? |
RE:Dumbfounded?
Worm hatches are long over. The fish were likely just very picky and keyed in on a certain bait at the time. Its frustrating yes,but it does happen.

RE:Dumbfounded?
Hi John, the fish that night just seemed not to be interesting in feeding? I did catch about 5 fish on small shads, but with the numbers I saw rolling on the surface, as I drifted over them with my Kyak I couldn't understand why I wasn't catching more? #^^^^^^&, I have talked to other guy's I fished with and understand that they have noticed a centipede like worm hatch, reddish in color, that the Bass seem to be feeding on. One of them told me he talked to someone who caught a keeper and when he looked into the stomach section after cleaning, he saw it was filled with the same kind of worm? Rich, I do have a fly rod, but that night I didn't bring it with me! You can bet I'll be tying some kind of fly the next time I get out to that spot!
