speaking of NJ Tackle
 

I want to make some swimmers and I am going to order some lips, in the hopes that then I am starting at square 2.
Which ones? Anyone have some good recomendations for a starter selection?

What type of plugs do you want to make? All of their lips are good. Pikie lips are good for pikies and various swimmers (wider wobble with some roll), danny lips for danny and similar swimmers (more of a snake like wiggle), lefty lips are similar to a danny lip, but you'll get a little more roll, surfster lips for surfsters (wide wobble with a good amount of roll). Decide what type of plugs you will be making and pick the appropriate lip based on that decision.

I work at a college and have a big pool to test in when the river hardens up.

I started turning about a year ago. I'm still all over the map with what I make. But I did learn over the summer what plugs work better than others, at least at the time of day and tide that I was fishing (mostly at Cranes Beach). So that has started me making more of particular kinds of plugs for the coming season. Then there are those plug types that I just like to make. Now I have to find where, when and how to fish them.

I'd try a cross section of the various lips that are available, make a bunch of differnt kinds of plugs and see what the fish tell you and what you like making.
