|
Those are fantastic!!
I'm not hijacking this thread but since we're speaking of MAC's Pikies, are these a type of plug that is sold anywhere commercially for saltwater fishing or only by personal plug makers? The only one I own or ever fished is an early Newell guy (aka MAC) which I purchased at last year's winter plugfest. I've absolutely loved fishing it this year in a variety of settings. Hoping I can add a few more to my arsenal for next year. |
MAC Pikies
MAC, The chicken Scratch paint job of yours, inspired the danny I sent to the auction, and your chicken sctratch pike that I have, got me my first fish of the year... 2 and a half minutes from capesams driveway :p nice bunker... and herring... pearl too :claps: all good stuff :kewl: |

Those make me think impure thoughts, MAC! Nice!
|
Me like bottom left... :-)
What lip is that? NJT? |
yes pikie2
|
Thought so. I like that big shoulder at the front of the plug. Did you put a bit of lead under the chin?

By placing the buckshot under the chin, does that "anchor" the plug when you're fishing it in current so that it doesn't roll over on its back? Or does it affect the roll vs wiggle?
|
pulls the nose down and makes the lip work better. The width of lip compared to body width is what affects roll over.
|
Lip width
Can you talk about that a bit more? I've never been happy with the action on the pikies I made over the summer.
|
The width of lip at widest part can be no wider than the body or you'll have way too much roll and plug will want to roll over. Also the lower bend where it goes to 45 degrees shouldn't hang below the bottom edge of the plug ot you'll have problems.
I made 7 attempts to get this plug where it is at. Lots of variations and tweaking |
I saw all those at the house ,,,look even better in person.. Yowzaa !!!!
|
I agree with that Tagger. Makes you appreciate them that much more when you can hold the plugs and view them up close. Very nice......

Tuning a pikie
MAC, Thanks for your comments and insight on the pikies. Helps give me a baseline to tackle them as a plug style.... I can appreciate your having to make 7 different attempts to get the plug where you wanted it. Some of those changes in the plug and the action must have been prettty subtle as you got it narrowed down. What told you that you had it "right"?
|
yes, this little pike works in the canal and won't roll out. A lot of metal lips will roll out at the end of the swing. Not this one. I am very happy with it.
|
I'm beginning to understand when Bassmaster says that a plug has a sweet spot. On the ones that I've made where I've found that sweet spot, you can really feel the plug dig. It feels like there's something alive at the other end of the line. and current or retrieve speed don't affect them. They don't roll.
I've not fished the Canal, but it sure looks like there's a fair amount of current there. Must be sweet to see those Pikies work under those conditions! |
Damm, those are nice!
|
if you want to unload the entire lot, pm me. (very serious)
