The Mink run is on

O.k. well not exactly, but as I was throwing eels last night a 3 foot long river otter swam right by me as I was wading in the dark. I could tell it had no idea that i was 3 feet away from him, so I made a meowing noise at it and I just about gave it a heart attack:hihi: If I had waited a few seconds more I could have tapped him on the head with my rod tip.

cute little bugger.

RIJIMMY 11-16-2004 11:56 AM

There are otters in RI? Thats pretty cool

Nebe 11-16-2004 12:11 PM

Yep.. this is the 2nd one I have seen this season. You wont find them at the ocean, but you will find them in salt ponds, and estuaries... I'd go on but i dont want to give up my fall honeyhole

spence 11-16-2004 12:17 PM

I have a funny story about otters and honey holes but I ain't telling :hihi:

They have plentyo f them in RI. I don't know how they affect the salt water populations, but if you have a family move into your freshwater area. Find a new place to fish. They will eat everything. Probably equivalent to saltfishing when seals are around.

MakoMike 11-16-2004 04:11 PM

I hear the minks only work if trolled very slowly on Wickeden street. :D

chris L 11-16-2004 04:29 PM

a rigged mink might catch you a cat .

Swimmer 11-16-2004 05:24 PM

How do you rig a mink?

Would that be the same thing the old timers use to do to eels with the long needle?

In our family their was no clear line
between religon and fishing. :D :D

I have a pond on my property and have repeatedly stocked it with trout. As soon as the otters figure out that there are fish to be had they literally clean it out. I have given up. I did put herring in the pond last year and they are still there. I would guess that otters don't like the taste of herring.

RIJIMMY 11-17-2004 08:54 AM

Pie, I guess you can say those otters are hard of herring.

bart 11-17-2004 09:00 AM

i've seen them minks, otters whatever they are on the rocks down your way eben.

we have minks in a pond by our house, pretty cool, never realized it til my moms saw em while walking the dog. i thought they only lived in the salt.....
