What Else Do I Need?
 

Hey guys,
I'm looking for some advise. I just baught a lathe for spinning up some plugs. I guess what I need to know is, what else do I need? I don't have lots of money to go out and buy large expensive machinery. I'd like to start learning to build plugs but I'd like to do it on a small budget. Could you guys recomend some things I will need to get me going. Also I was hoping to get a decient air brush. I was looking on the dixie art web site, but for someone that doesn't know much it was fairly confusing. Any advise on a good air brush would be great. Thanks so much guys, peace PB

If you don't have a drill press, I'd get one of the inexpensive bench-top models. You will need this.

if youre just starting out ..you can build a lot of plugs with a hand drill and spray cans while you learn.

you probably will want a belt sander too.

you will need to find the right size drill bits for eyes, nose and tail grommets, through holes, the belly holes, etc. many prefer to use forstner bits where they can because they make a clean cut with no tearout.

if you havent used that lathe yet make sure you get the safety gear to protect you when you are turning.

save up for a lathe if You can or look around on ebay for a used one

PB...you will find most of the cash you lay out will be for the small things.....drill bits, plug hardware, primer, sandpaper, paint, hooks....all this stuff hits you harder than the big ticket items.....:eek: take it from one who knows!:smash: If you already got a lathe....get a small drill press....at Homies they have the Rhyobi for like $99.00...I got one and it is great!:D

definately the drill press, they are on sale at homo cheapo for 87 bucks right now. i also find the bandsaw to be quite handy.

I'd start with buzz cans, you can buy most colors for less than a buck at Wallyworld or Home dumpo.
You will have plenty to confuse you for a while without dealing with an airbrush too.
Besides look at some of the pics on this site for examples of buzzcan work, it's as good as any massproduced plugs.

Stick with the cans first. And go for the drill press and sander. If you go back and look at grumpy I mean Capesams threads you will see why. Steve does all his paint work with cans. And they come out awesome.

some chisel's, think i got my set at homies for $30. 1" skew, 1" gouge and a parting tool is all i use. If you got the money, get the best chisels you can, its worth it. A 12" drill bit is needed for through holes, you can cut it down to a more managable size if needed. Get some foster (sp?) bits for eyes and belly weights. Need weights too, either use 00 buckshot, small egg sinkers or get yourself a melting pot and make a mold out of 2x4's. Good luck, its addictive :-}
