What brand snaps and pound test
Do you pluggers recommend?
Thanks, Mike |
I would get the breakaway swivels..I know Mike at M&D's has them..won't have to worry about them opening up on a big fish..
Ask BM.. :smash: |
30 lb breakaway fastlink clips are my favorite, but they wont work on Tins
|
I got the 80 lb ones..

Berkley Cross-Lok #1 (35#), #3 (60#)
I did play with breakaway snaps this summer in saltwater... I don't remember the size but they were almost the same length as the #1 Cross-Lok's. *********EDIT********** I went on asumption that nothing changed. The Cross-Lok's I own are about 4 years old if not older... they are not thin wire like some are saying... I purchased these in bulk like my hooks so when I'm at the shops I skip those sections... |
i have to agree with Eben, 30# breakaway clips. i have only had 1 open up so far. it was on a jig snagged on a lobster pot. the only drawback is using them on tins. you need to add a split ring to get them on.
|
And they are a mother to get on a split ring. Try getting one on a bomber with split ring on the nose. It will drive you nuts.
|
to solve the split ring problem, hold it with needle nose pliers. it makes it a little easier. otherwise, i remove the split ring from all my swimmers. i only use them on tins.

I love the large size breakaway clips but i can't get em on some big jig hooks.so i use a coastlock # 54or #55.but they open also.blues seem to be the largest culprit with the head shaken an all.when snagged i usaully open hooks.on a jig i think the best thing to do is a loop knot but I'm way to lazy to go thru that everytime i change.i know I'm gonna learn my lesson the hard way .:(

150# coastlock snaps. A real pain in the arse to get on a bucktail but they are almost unopenable.

I use to be a duo-loc guy for many years, then went into my stelth period and went as light and use a thin wire berkely crosslocs and another small snaps. This year after getting a bad batch of thin wire cross locs I went a little heavier and moved to SPRO bb snap swivels. But I really don't need a swivel right next to the snap. The spro snap is really strong for the size. I wish they just made the snap part alone.
Late in the season I was introduced to the breakaway snap (from slipknot)...They seem great! I really like the ease of changing plugs with those snaps. Everyone says they are pretty strong. (they look like a weak paperclip though) Next season I plan to used them a lot. Also, for light tackle, Fisherwomen and Baitcaster gave me an Spro snap swivel that I had never seen before. It has a funny clip on a swivel. Really thin wire but amazingly strong. Great for bones and albies. I plan to get a load of those for my sub 15# test gear and use the breakaway snap for the heavy surf stuff. Sometimes when I know I have the lure I plan on fishing with for a while and the action is slow, I will tie the floro leader direct with a loop and not use a snap at all. |
I've found the thin wire Berkely snaps pull apart way too easily.

They do now, but I had a big batch I got a a few years ago that were much tougher. I used them up and bought another gross, 1/4 of these were bad just looking at them and didn't close right. Then out of the ones that seemed ok, several wore out quick and were bent all out of shape when I landed a fish. I never lost a fish with one but it was clear they would not hold up. Esp with braid!. So I moved to spro. But these breakaways (BAD name for a snap if you ask me) seem pretty good.

Thats when berkley changed suppliers to manafacure them. You got to love low bidders:af: |
100lb spro snaps
|
the small spro swivels and duo-lock snaps. I use the 150lb duolocks and they are great, they have a nice big loop at the end so the plug/tin/bucktail can swing more.
|
Has anybody ever tried to make their own?;)
|
I was fishing with this guy from cali and he raved about the snaps crow makes but I aint seen any:( He told me some story about lifting the guy up by his waders out to some barnicle covered rocks sounds like fun :D
