Maple is....
very humbling to work with :smash: :smash: :smash:
AYC had me so spoiled:( |
Give cypress a try.
|
I love turning maple! Just make sure your tools are sharp!
|
Turning wasnt the problem it was drilling the blanks out that had me screaming bloody murder. My bits kept wandering in all the wrong places. out of 10 blanks I got 2 good ones
|
remind me not to hire you to do finish work in my house:hihi:
|
Good Quality, SHARP Drills, NO problem
|
Eben, if I can center drill an 11 inch cheapo hardwood dowel, you should be able to do a little maple :smash:

Pink as in transparent Cranberry?? yes.
If you want to do a trade I need some plug building supplies... hooks, eyes, lips, weights, wood, etc :D |
BI Jeff says that transparent cranberry danny's are great at Black Rock

Eben,
be careful with booger, he's already asked for pink glass, if he walks in with a huge bag of fake black hair, you'll know he's making one of those obnoxious pink schlong plugs, but out of glass .... I would run dude... while you still can :laughs: -Dave |
:hidin:
|
ahh the P-town popper...... Imagine gut-hooking a cow on one of those
|
Is that code? Cows?? You freak
nevermind gut hooking a cow on that... imagine taking one out of your plug bag! Isn't that bad enough?? :laughs: But I could see snapping one on the line and just walking down the line at pips in the fall or at the herring run in the spring... oh man that would be something. -DAve |
back to my maple woes :(
I figured out my problem..... i wasnt using a brad point. :smash: I just ordered a 10 inch and a 6 inch brad point in 1/8ths from Bits n bores  |
Eben,
I have found that the 10 inch brad points still wander. Stick with the 6, another trick I use is, I dril from the rear of the plug using a 3/16 bit and fron the nose using a 1/8, gives you a bigger target if you wander slightly from the nose, and the 3/16 doesn't wander mach at all. Actually, I ground my 1/8 bit down to about 4 1/2" and I drill most of the way using the 3/16. Just my $0.02 -Dave |
aha... thats a good trick dave.
now I just need the time :smash: :smash: |
Maple is def tough to work with....I havent started making plugs yet but i work on custom cabinets/fixtures for a living and we use tons of maple. Pain in the arse sometimes!!:smash: You guys would seriosly die if you saw all the lumber in our shop:D Major pluggage stock:D One of these days i'll take up plug buliding, certainly wont have to pay for wood thats for sure.
|
 Hi Skip, another cabinet guy here :)
|
i got some more bits in the mail today and lets just say my old bits were 'stone age quality' the test will be when I make some 10 inch needles :D
|
and when you're done, you can send one to me for inspection
