I would say go with the airbrush. It gives you the ability to mix up the basic colors to make any color you want. You can do the detail work too. You (or Santa ;) ) can get one pretty cheap right now from Michael's or AC Moore. I took a Michaels 60% off any single item coupon into AC Moore and picked up a Badger 360 for around $50. Search the newspaper inserts for the coupons.

Only downfall is that you will need a compressor. But if you already have one, I'd say the airbrush is the way to go. But lot's of guys do some unbelievable work with cans too.

If you want to keep really busy - get a lathe. :D
