any body watching commercial fsihing program on history channel on wed at 10 p.m.

Yeah, I am watching that Pete...pretty fascinating stuff!;)

I love how technology has let them design nets that can sort the fish. They fiquered out that pollok swim higher than cod so they put a line in the middle that lets the cod go out the bottom.

I also liked the design of the prederators mouth. It caused the fish to try and get out of the net. The small ones could and the big ones couldn't.

Even with the farming it looks like tuff times may be ahead.

If the fishery went back to hook an lin there would be plenty of cod for everybody and all the tme,

Very good show, I wish I stayed awake for the whole thing.

I liked the point that without Cod there may not of been a United States.

And in 1913 when buiding Bostons subway, they found a fish weir used by the indians.

Plus some real good Lobstering tips.

I second that Santini. I have been saying to myself for years that with a hook and line, rod and reel...(forget about long line for now)...you will not overfish an industry. You can keep a selective size.

Even if a guy had say a 35' Bruno&Stillman with 3 automatic jigging machines with 1 mate onboard he could get his 800# on a good day, maybe not everyday, that's fishing. Even though it is a machine fishing it still seems a better way to sustain a fishery to me.

I fish by the Isle of shoals a lot, and now that I know what that big yellow can is, (Fish feeder) I know were to fish.

How nice, a spot in the ocean with thousands of fish that can not go anywhere! :D

The shots of a net being draged on the bottom were cool!

As a direct result of not being able to use draggers, boat owners would resort to buying far more smaller boats and the current take would hold steady. The market would demand it and it wouldn't get anyone anywhere.

There'd be plenty of cod if the take limits were lowered.

Those additional boats couldn't get licenses. right now no one can get a new groundfish license (Federal).

Angler, thanks for that. Did you fish the Whaleback at all in late Sept, we had a couple days that over a dozen fish were brought in (not mine) from the "fleet". And those yellow cans, aren't they some NOAA bouys or somthing like that, where the fence?? B

Not sure What Whaleback is? is that a location out there? I'm still new to this boat fishing. I try fishing everywhere!
I had days in the spring of NO Fish! I did best later in the fall (further out) I had days I would catch as quick as I could get a line down. Cod Haddock and Pollock

The Whaleback is a series of ledges 3 miles southeast of IOS. There will be as many as 50 boats anchored up there in the fall waiting for the Tuna to come out of the deeper water and attack the schools of herring. Its on the edge of the 240' line. We saw a lot of BFT but never hooked a giant. We did get 2 Threshers though, unexpected. And a bizzillion dogs. Halfway hump and outside flag are good spots too (on the 240 line).
