A little story....

Ok, I just wanted to share a story and a few pictures from a new member of the striper addicts club, my father.

My dad was a forth generation commercial fisherman, he got out of the game two years ago. Before this year he had never caught a striped bass on rod and reel. I don't know what he had against striper fishing but he just could see any interest in fishing recreationally. He did fish commercially since he was 12 years old so I guess he saw everything on the water as work. Back in the 90's I also had a lobster boat and we would fish inside during the striper months within sight of each other. He used to go ballistic when he saw me fishing for stripers instead of pulling my traps. He would get on the radio, "what are you doing, let’s go, get those traps pulled". I would hear it from him when I got home, and I would hear it from my friends that worked on the boat with him. I guess he used to tell his sternmen stuff like "oh my god, there he goes bass fishing again!", and “Doesn’t that kid ever work!” and other stuff like that. Needless to say I did fish for stripers for 70% of the day most of the time, but I was doing what I loved.

Well, this year I finally won the battle and gained a great fishing partner. He never knew that you could have so much excitement and fun from catching fish. He's a very stubborn guy and actually came right out and admitted he was wrong, I even got a "what the heck was I thinking" out of him:D

The first keeper he caught in his life was this spring, 29". He brought it home and cooked it up - it was a little rat - but it was his. I kept telling him that you need to stick with it and soon he would get a large fish. He stuck with it all year and fished with me almost everyday I went out.

Well, in the end it paid off. He just sent me a pic of his big fish of the year that we caught together and I wanted to share.

Pictures to follow if I can figure it out….

Oh what memories you are going to have and stories you will have to tell tour kids and grand children!!! Fantastic!!!

S-J I can not tell you how much that story is amost exactly what has happened to me over the last two seasons. My Dad was a commercial fisherman on a 65ft family-owned dragger for 30+ years and until last season, had never landed a striper on rod/reel. This past season he landed his first keeper, also a rat fish and progressed to catch many large (although admittedly not as large as YOUR Dads fish). I fished with him all year long when in years past I would barely ever see the man. He will be 70 years old this spring. We are already ribbing each other about who is gonna get the bigger striper this season!
Thanks for sharing!

kewl story :D

i come from a long line of stripermen.. my great grandfather fished for stripers in Newjersey and maine, my grandfather fished for them at Cuttyhunk, my dad did once in a while (nothing like his dad and granddad) and now i fish for the striped ones.. and hopefully in a few years my son will too :D

My father-in-law is my fishing partner most of the time. My father thinks it is easier to go to the store and buy the fish. He misses the point. I get my fishing genes from my grandfather, but would love it if my father would fish with me.

reelecstasy 01-04-2005 04:46 PM

well, I doubt my dad would ever pick up a pole and fish with me but I am hoping to start something great with my son and daughter as well..... My son 6 sits on the bed and pretends to land biggins, it is the funniest thing to see. He did that for the first time just a few weeks ago and I couldn't figure out WTH he was doing till he said "dad, lip em!" too funny...He already is a great sweet water bass fisher..This spring he is hittin the beach for some schoolies with dad...:D

There's nothing like fishing with family members, especially the old man.....it's just good being on the water with him...

Good stuff, bet you showed him a side of fishing he never knew existed. Nothing like seeing an old timer like that come alive when they start catching stripers. I'm guessing it brings them back to when they were younger and fishing was fun and not just work.

Yup, sounds the same:-)

Thats a nice story S-J. It's always nice to share the things you love to do with a family member.

Great story! I can't wait to fish more with my sons, my favorite fishing days are when my old man is there with me. (of course I do have to put up with him screaming "Havast Ye land lubber" on any boat we go on, but now I look forward to that.)
