Herring Fling
Winter doldrums. No one looks forward to them. How would you guys like to put a bend in the rod fishing for blueback herring? Normally, I would say a winter fling at the UI plant but that looks be closed for security reasons. So we can hook up down here and get some fishing done and MAYBE bury the hatchet in person?
Blueback herring are great fish. You can pickle them, smoke them, use them as bait in the spring. Good baitfish. No prizes, no winner. Just guys fishing. All you need is a light rod and reel. 12lb test is plenty. A mustad or sabiki herring rig and some 3/4 to 1.5 oz sinkers. For clothes, ya need to bundle up. Since we'll be standing on aluminum, heavy boots are good and wool socks are good too. Heavy sweatpants, sweaters, all that stuff. No waders needed. No korkers needed. Gloves are a must! Lodging is a 5 minute walk from the spot. You can get into the marina with no sticker then too. If you don't want to spend money on lodging, just show up and go home in the same day. Bring a bucket and a garbage bag. Keep the fish wet in the bucket until you go home, then just toss them in the garbage bag because they are stinky fish. Here are the CT rules. You can fish for herring from 12:01 Wednesday morning until 12:00 Saturday night. 25 per fisherman. Anyone want some great bait for the spring? Anyone interested? They are a great strong fish on light tackle and often, you'll get 2 to 5 of them on the line at once. It's great fishing if you can put up with the cold. |
I'm gonna have a couple schoolie holdover fests this winter for anyone interested. I'll see how things go with the plant over the next month....
Then there is GS's Flotilla al a Thames for anyone with a dingy or tin boat ;) |
John,
You will never be able to have an outing at the powerplants. No time soon at least. Back when they weren't so strict, you used to be able to do anything you want there. Guys used to have fires going to warm up to. It was good then. Now, you can't do anything. Come on guys! What could be more fun then standing on a dock jigging up herring? |
Ice Fishing!!!!!
|
You know I've never been ice fishing. Always wanted to go but the lakes near my house never really freeze thick enough where I trust it.
What I've also always wondered about, seems like most of the guys that ice fish either use those tip-ups or short rods. Once they hook up, how do you fight a big fish? Doesn't the line scrape on the ice? Never did quite understand it. One of my parent's friends has an auger. I'll see if he's still into it and will show me the ropes. |
schoolie fishin a-la GS style is fun (as long as you bring your snowpants:( HA!HA! ) But you guys can HAVE that ice fishing stuff! Snow flies and I get my "need for speed"!!!!!!!:D :D

Hunting, open water on the Cape till it freezes, then ice fishing. Patrick you can get some big fish through the ice, just taking your time and not pressuring them. Largest largemouth caught in Ma. was over 15 lbs. through the ice! It was caught at Sampsons Pond (wrong!) but GS and half the state know the right place. Some of the fish I've caught ice fishing are Pike to 10lbs. Salmon to 6, pikeral to 5.5, and bass to 7. I love it!

Maybe we'll have a COD trip. Have a pool for the biggest fish and if it's snotty out - the first one to yack

I bet I'd be the first to yak http://forums.evilnet.net/ubb/smilies/pukeface.gif

I'd be into a COD fling, maybe out of Plymouth. Canalratt fishes more for Cod during the winter than I do, so he'd probably be better at picking the right time/location. I'm still looking forward to a Thames mini fling, just got to get a few Honey Do's done, plus it will get better after the water cools more and they start to bunch up.

Got rubber ? It would be worth the trip to see BM with a boat rod in hand;) Like any winter fishing you have to dress for it. It sounds like it would be a hoot. |
