Pats Picked #5 Team All-Time

Watching some espn show where they pick the top 10 all-time teams (by season as far as most dominant) and the Pats 03 team was picked number 5 behind #1 85 Bears....#2...72 Dolphins...#3....89 SF 49'ers....and #4 Steelers (I forget which year). I will buy that!

Yah all the guys on ESPN also picked the Chargers to beat the Jets, you mean that ESPN right:rolleyes: Gimme a break the Cowboys of the 90's had a much better team than the Pats

BigFish 01-09-2005 10:49 AM

Pretty sure they are talking most dominant over the course of a season.....not that the Pats are better than the Cowboys, but rather that in that particular season they were the best, most dominating team. I think the 72 Dolphins should get the nod as they were undefeated for the entire season, playoffs and won the Superbowl.....most dominant team over a period of time my pick would be the Montana/Rice/Lott/Craig 49'ers. They were awesome....just my opinion mind you!;)

The 86 Giants were a better team than either Pats SB winner.

Simms vs Brady? I'll take Simms. Joe Morris was a better RB than anyone the Pats had last year. Mark Bavaro at TE, Lionel Manuel at WR, altho the Pats had better depth at WR. O-line? Both pretty good.

SB results? Edging a decent, but not spectacular, Carolina Panthers' team as opposed to blowing out the Elway-led Broncos? You gotta be kidding me.

BTW--we were also 14-2 during the regular season, and our losses were by 3 at Dallas in the opening game of the year, and by 5 at Seattle. We demolished the Niners 49-3 in the opening playoff, shut down Washington 17-0 in the NFC Championship and clobbered the Broncos 39-20 after falling behind 12-7 early in the SB.

The only team that ever had 4 better linebackers than Taylor, Carson, Kelly and Hunt were the 1990 Giants with Banks taking Hunt's place.

MikeP...talking about a team and a great season.....those Giants will never be mentioned in a list like that...they would barely be a footnote. What was their record? Just saying that they were not a dominant all around team.;)

See my edited post above---14-2, undefeated at home, dominant in the playoffs.

Speaking of footnotes---here's a couple of more. Included in that 14-2 record were regular season wins over all 3 teams we faced in the playoffs (2 in the case of the Redskins). 371 points scored vs 237 points given up, second only to the Bears in the entire NFL.

True, there weren't a lot of blowout wins---but smashmouth ball-control was Parcells' style. How many blow-out wins did you guys have last year?

And besides, wouldn't you want to save your blowouts for when it really counted, anyhow--- 49-3 (that would be Joe Montana wearing that #3 uniform for the 12-4 Niners in that game), 17-0 and 39-20? :laughs:

In the Free Agency era, It's damn near impossible to put together back to back SB wins. One more absolutely seals the deal on a dynasty. The unbeaten streak is something to consider as well.

I think the Giants team that won (1986 ? ) when Phil Sims was superbowl mvp was the One if not the Best team I've ever seen!!!
Not only did they Dominate the regular season ( not to mention they were BY FAR the toughest division)
They DOMINATED the playoffs

I don't see how any team could be rated higher than the 72 dolphins. They beat every team they faced. We have no idea just how good they might have been cause they were better than any of the available competition. Yards Gained , points score etc mean nothing unless they are put up against the quality of play from the opposition at the time.

It reminds me of when they asked Bill Russell if he thought he'd have been a great player against todays modern athletes. his answere was that he rose to the accasion and beat anyone he was put against. he has no idea how good he could have been if the competition was better to challenge him more.

Anyway , if I had to pick , I'd say the team nobody could ever beat was the best team ever!!
