Vintage Fishing Related Memorabilia Thread

In the tradition of the now famous "Some Plugs" thread, I wanted to post something similar for those of you who collect fishing related stuff (and I know many of you do);) Magazines, photos, fishing gear, anything you might have....lets see it!:eyes:

BigFish 01-11-2005 10:09 PM

Close up....cool stuff inside these mags too! :D

BigFish 01-11-2005 10:11 PM

Surfcasting the California coast!:D

What I like about reading the old books and photo is that you can see how people caught big fish on simple equipment. They never had the technology back then.
So much for me saying that since I am as guilty as anyone else for buying all that stuff. :hihi:

reelecstasy 01-12-2005 10:20 AM

I knew Bigfish would have some good stuffs, at least I was hoping seeing as though I know you do a little antiqing..:D

Flaptail 01-12-2005 12:38 PM

Hey Larry, does it say who any of the artisits were that painted some of those covers? I have been tracking down some works by a guy named Lynn Bogue Hunt. He did some great paintings of Montauk, Cuttyhunk etc. They were all fishing related like trolling Sow and Pigs etc. Also he did a lot of hunting paintings. That's a cool collection.

Mr. Sandman 01-12-2005 12:38 PM

you got an april 1953 sports afield? lookin for one.

BigFish 01-12-2005 01:01 PM

Flaptail....here are the artists.

1937 Sports Afield-Walter Haskell Hinton

1949 Field and Stream-Walter Dower

1956 Outdoor Life-Charles Dye

You have to love the artwork from the bygone days. Too bad they don't use art like that today.:D

I'm with you, BigFish - I love the old cover art. You've got a nice collection going there :kewl:

Hy Watson is still my favorite illustrator, I think - when he took over the helm of Field and Stream as editor he also did the covers and would do an article or two to boot - and he wasn't a kid at the time either....

I have a full page 1937 Camel ad illustrated by Lynn Bogue Hunt featuring Chisie Farrington (her husband Kip was the F&S Saltwater Editor from '37 to '73) pursuing her record BFT - it's hilarious because the ad has Chisie touting the health benefits of smoking Camels! :laughs: All I have to do now is find it...

Man, how times change....

BTW - who was the illustrator for the Outdoor Life cover with the guy relaxing and enjoying his pipe after landing his bass?

I've seen a few variations on that theme - that's a great one.

BigFish 01-12-2005 07:39 PM

CA thats done by Charles Dye.....I saw that cover someplace and always wanted a copy for my collection. One day on a trip north, went into an antique shop and there it was staring up at me! 8 bucks later it was mine!:D Someday, when I get a house and I have my dream man cave....it will hang on the wall nicely framed.

Thanks, BigFish -

Lynn Bogue Hunt - Fishing Montauk Light in a cuttyhunk bass boat.

Story inside about his adventure.

Now that we are on the topic, I have been looking for some work by a gnet named Guy Coleach. He was famous for his waterfowl artwork, but he also did some fish artwork. The one I am searching for is the striped bass eating a sandworm. I had the print at one time byut it got destoyed during a move. A "friend" of mine took the print and I never saw it again. If anyone knows of the print or knwos where there is one for sale let me know.

Man Bigfish you've got alot of Ol-Stuff there!!!
Nice mag's any smutt in them?:hihi:

I saw yur thread and thought if i had any old stuff packed away. I remembered Years & years ago my Grand Daddy gave me a box, inside of it contained a spiner with a tool & a parts list.
He told me never to use it.Give it to you're Son some day, you'll see.keep it in a dark & cool place.like a closet, put it away & forget about it period!

well I have granted his wish'es, it' has been in my possion for the past 28years & I can proudly say that it has never been used.
I just Googled the Reel # and came up with a web site, it helped me get a date of MFG. it dates back to 1965.
Judging buy packing dexterity, color schem ect.. I'd say it's pretty close.I really don't know but if anybody here has one or knows please Chime in.I'd like to know.

My Grandfather is gone so I really don't have a leg to stand on.
Hope you enjoy It.

1962 Race Point article & artwork inside about Cape Cod Stripers.

Flaptail 01-13-2005 06:09 AM

Mike that Lynn Bogue Hunt painting is of Otto Scheer's boat "Punkinseed" at Montauk. Punkinseed was the precursor of the Cuttyhunk and other bass boats. It lost in the 38' hurricane.

Can you open up your head so I can get inside and hang out for a while? There's lots of stuff in there I need.

Flaptail 01-13-2005 08:08 AM

Actually Mike, aside from fishing related stuff there's lots of open space.:D

BigFish 01-13-2005 08:10 AM

Boy, Flap, that's next on my reading list -

Glassel as you probably know still has the record for black marlin at 1,570 lbs - the fish is now at the Smithsonian and the footage of that battle was used in the movie version of 'The Old Man and The Sea' with Spencer Tracey.

Hope to pick it up soon - I'm just now finishing up my annual reread of Jerry Sylvester's 'Saltwater Fishing Is Easy' -

Signed edition....hmmm....:smokin:.....nice, very nice!

Flaptail 01-13-2005 09:30 AM

Yeah, the record still stands and is still hanging on the wall at the Smithsonian.

I was priviledged enough to get a private tour of the IGFA Museum in 93' when they were in the planning stages of moving back to Ft. Lauderdale and the new place. I was permitted to read through the logs of Michael Lerners expeditions to Chile and the South Pacific. Also got to look through his photo albums there. It was an awesome experience.
