Cod Fishing
I'm a novice cod fisherman and I have a few questions. I have been using a 9 and 12 oz jig tipped off with sea clam and a red teaser tube. This has been working well but......the bait shop "fore river bait and tackle" does not open until 8am, I want to start fishing earlier. Bob's doesn't open until 8:30. By the way, I plan on fishing Boston Harbor tom. am as the winds will be calm....last trip of the season!!
Can you use the jig without sea clams with any success?. Can you use cod chunks? If I am able to catch any mackeral I was thinking of chunking it! Can you use quohogs, or anything else puchased at Stop & Shop?? Any comments or suggestions would be greatly appreciated!!! |
You can jig without the clams but it is not always effective. Call Ron at the Sportsman's Den. He may be open until 6 or 7pm to pick them up tonight 617-770-3884 ... He has special Clams ;)

Hey Gus, the cod fishing in Boston Harbor is fantastic right now. If you want to fish for them and not worry about bait. We have been using 12 -14 oz Norwegien jigs. Let them drop to the bottom do 1 crank up off the bottom and start jigging. This has been very successful and productive.
We were out yesterday and caught over 60 cod between 7 - 20 lbs. We had a friend out with us and we kept our limit, which by the way is 10 per person and they must be at least 21 inches long to keep. We stocked the freezer. Needless to say the body hurts today, but what a blast. Couple of places to start and try are Utonia Ledge just off of Point Allerton. All the cod we caught yesterday were off of the tip of Nahant. Go till you find the 50 ft water mark and start jigging. Just drift and keep in that depth and you will hammer them!!!! The tackle shops are burnt out and starting to wind down for the season, not too many people are fishing now so none of them are doing alot of business. Fore River is open at 7 AM - 5 every day, I don't think Ron is opening till later and not sure what time he closes but he has been sometimes gone by 3 so not sure. But alot of time these guys have to go out and get supplies and do banking and stuff and don't have people to work the shops so they have to close up when they go for supplies. Good luck, hope you do well. |
Gus no need for bait especially when the dogs are out. Cod will hit anything and just use all your old rubber worms, grubs etc. for teasers. If you do get macks filet them with the bones intact and cut into strips.
