Distance measuring devices

Since I walk miles and miles, I am seriuosly considering using a device this summer to keep track of how many miles I walk fishing.
Does anyone have any advice on a particular unit that would be waterproof and practical for the sand?
I think they are called "pedometers"or something. I have looked in the Cabela's catalog but have not been able to find anything.
Any one have any experience with them?

You can walk about 6 miles over sand in the time it takes to walk half a mile down in Rhody.
Its almost equal labor wise though. The sand is tough walking.....let me rephrase that , slogging through, whereas down on the rocks ya gotta wear 5 pounds of corkers on each foot. So its all relative.

I personally find it tougher on the rocks cause you gotta have your wits about you and stay alert constantly, even when you're beat tired, whereas down on the cape I have walked miles stumbling with my eyes closed without fear of takin a Naps Digger.

a pedometer is what you're looking for, I got one for my wife once, that gift didn't go over well.

Wally World in Wyemouth has a ton for 3.88 each! In the so called sporting goods section.

Get a GPS. It will tell you how far you traveled. However, it's also great for scouting holes in the day, and then setting up in the money spot when you revisit at night.
