Speed-
how long does it take you guys to turn a plug??? When i started out last year, it took me around 12 minutes to spin out a danny blank, but these days I seem to be hovering around 5 minutes to chuck it in, hog it out and dress out the tapers on the nose and tail. I have 3 pairs of calipers when I do my turning.. one for the belly diameter, one for the nose, and one for the tail- Granted, each blank comes out slightly different, but its a very small difference from one to another.
Duplicators are for pussies IMO :bshake:  :hihi: My goal is 3 minutes :smokin: |
45 sec.'s:p ....I luv dupy's.
|
35 secs +sanding...Ditto Capesams
|
45 seconds??? really??? I guess I have a chitty duplicator because it takes me about 10 to 12 minutes with mine so I stopped using it. Its one of those Penn state industries ones.. now i only use it for my tool rest :hihi:
If theres a duplicator out there that I could attach to my carbatech lathe that will do it in 45 seconds, i might make the switch :D |

Haven't timed it yet, but I'm well under a minute with my homemade dupy, and I'm a rookie.
Eben, you're welcome to look at mine if ya want to make one. |
Cut your sizing diameters with your parting tool and calipers then blend them either with a gouge or skew depending on what you are more comfortable with.
Then you should only need minimal sanding to break the shine the tool leaves and blend the curves slightly. |
Note to self :rtfm:
I gotta make a duplicator:smash: |
My record is 56 2oz Habs Needles in an hour.
The average is 45 - 50 an hour - including sanding. As sson as the phone rings or someone stops by to dinrk a beer, there goes the average. Take your time, mistakes cost more than you think. |

What version of the vega are you guys using? I have the midi on my Jet and figure 15 plugs an hour, sanded.
Eben, I use the Penn State one on my Grizzly lathe for a while. Was getting 10-12 plugs an hour. Roughed out the blank with the gouge, then hit them with the Penn State. Jigman |
Tattoo, you animal!!!!!
wow.. i'm gonna have to do some homework about this :read: |
Eben,
If you have 4000 + needles to turn, you figure out ways to become very efficient. It gets boring right around 1500...around 2000 it sucks.....3000 you wonder why the hell your doing it.....3999 you hate needlefish and anything that looks like them. |

I make em one at a time which sucks i don't have a duplicator and I'am too lazy to make one of the Capesams type. But I really like turnin a piece of wood. other than paniting its my favorite part.i chuck a piece up an I never know where it's gonna take me.So i turn a blank takes i don't know, A while. Then i mark it for holes an eyes an stuff.then i drill, then i do the lip cut, cut off the ends through drill, add weight sand somemore.then e-poxy seal, prime, then i can paint, then i put em together add eyes, then i epoxy em takes about a yr for 12 plugs. When u got a duplicator u can set up jigs to do all the meanial tasks without marking or any of that crap an it goes alot faster as every plug is the same.I was on a roll for a while but have hit a little lull lately.I got bot a dozen to seal an have been avoiding them like the plague.if come on sat not sure i will have anything worthy to bring an some owsies will wipe me out pretty fast so i don't wanna come empty handed,I hate plugs. I remember being a pioneer in this plugbuilding thing now i'm just a fan.

Nib, hope U R there. U ain't no spectator, U make a sweet plug, and keep pioneering, 12 plugs a year from U, dude, quality always beats quantity

NIB_ Less is more :D
