If you could go Fishing with any Surf Fishing Legend who would it be and Why..........................

arnold lane . why ? cause he was walking fisherman that did what it took to get to the fish .

Frank Woolner, ever notice how he is mentioned and held in such high regard in everone's books.... there is a reason for that I would think.

Based on what I've seen on here, he seems like a great fisherman with alot of knowledge about the history of the sport, something that I find quite interesting. I'd like to pick his brain for a while.

Flaptail is at the top for me as well, I thought we were talking about individuals from the past, not modern day experts.:D

I have often thought about this before as I have been fortunate to fish with and learn from some of the most successful fisherman on the cape over the years.

I would say that the one I fish with that I truly enjoy and esteem to be as good as the most would have to be Mr. Tony C.

He is a living legend. I have learned more from him, yet still so much more to learn. All the unconventional methods of fishing people talk about, well he doesn't just talk about them, he does them.

And his stories of the "Good Old Days" keep me fired up even when the fishin is down.

Stan Gibbs....I just admire his life, the plugs he made, the contributions he made to our sport and I understand he was quite a great fisherman to boot!:D

Well I am flattered but really I suck, just ask Bassmaster. John you asked a really hard question to answer. There are so many. I was lucky enough to know a lot of them being a plucky kid who figured he had the chance, so why not talk to these guys. The worst you could get was "beat it kid". Fortunately I never got that response. I have fond memories of sitting in the basement of Stan Gibbs cottage "factory" watching him make plugs and he patiently answering questions, the same with his son John. I fished with Old Man Mac Reed, Stan Kuzia, Bunny DiPietro, Chester "Biff" Mc Ardle, Paul Kukonen. I sat In Frank Woolner's basement office and was showed his lure collection and received sage advice from him on what it takes to be a really good Striper Fisherman, I sat in Charlie Whitney's old shop on Race Point rd. back in the seventies and listened to him half whistle and half talk about fishing the beach. Had my first custom rods made by Charlie Murat at his little shop by the drive-in in N.Smithfield Rhode Island. Worked a couple days with Capt. Joe Eldridge on the Striper out of Barnstable while working as an alternate mate with Capt. Lucky Singleton. Fished on Johnny Shakliks Quahog II in Wellfleet and wathced Capt. Phil Schwind troll by us many times in Whitecap in the Bay while working the first year in 1972 on Seawitch.
Who would I like to have been able to fish with most? Arnold Laine. Just to sit back watch, listen and learn and keep my mouth shut on a outer Cape beach with him would have been just awesome.

Reason? Well, Arnold I don't think was ever topped by anybody, then, and I'd say the same for Tony C. today.

I've had the pleasure of fishing with some of the finest, even been skunked with a few, but always walked away with a bit more knowledge than I had before.

A night on the beach with Tony Stetzko, is priceless... he should be on the list as well. Same can be said for Dave Manzi, and Bruce May :)

Flap..I have fished with Phil Schwind many years ago on shore at the Herring run in Eatham,bayside..He was a character..Also fished on the Quahog II..Brings back some awesome memories...

I would have liked to fish with some of the oldies that were in Reading the Water..Have fished with Shultzie & Coop tho..

I want to fish with Bassmaster again. Nothing beats Dave yelling at New Yorkers!:laughs:

I don't know Mike, one thing I have always heard about Arnold, he was a loner, liked it like that, and made no bones about telling anbody that was how he liked it.

Tony C. will talk to ya, if he feels like it, and if he feels like it, will give you some great hints, (pay close attention), but he is a loner also... most of the great ones are.

I'd either like to fish the Block Island beaches of the 1970's with Charlie Dodge....or fly fish Winnapaug Pond with Ted Williams

I've been fortunate to have fished with some real good fishermen over the years--or at least, have shared shore space with them and chatted.

I've fished the flats in the Canal with Flap and Dave 'Ski. Plugged with John Gibbs, Donnie and Robbie Willis, Ron Arra, Kevin Heep, Bill Chapin and others I've probably forgotten. Jigged next to Andy and Al Mamarty and Big Dave, JPowers, slip, Saltheart and Smokey, Harrible, Scott B and many others.

Took a ride out on Nauset with BM and Tat.

Fished some places in RI with Hab, #^&#^&#^&#^&#^&#^& and Joe Flip.

On the Vineyard, I've fished a lot with Schultzie. Plus "Hawkeye" Jacobs, Janet Messinio and Charlie Cinto, Roland and squidmama.

Here on LI, I've fished with Alberto and Kadir, Steve McDonald, and ran into people like Jack Yee, Fred Golofaro and Doc Muller here and there.

But, the person I'd most want to fish with, one more time, is Hawg Hunter Brad, 'cause that would mean he'd still be with us

The four people I admire most, I have fished with already. Any one of them could be a legend but quite frankly I dont think a single one of them gives a crap weather they are considered a legend or not.

Like Krispy said, i'd rather go back in time...to the cow days...with the guys I fish with now (jigsy, you too)....if it has to be with a "known" fish slayer, Joyce Diagnault, i'm sure she's got more fish than a lot of todays "sharpies"....:) johnny
