How much line on lobster traps............
quick survey about how much line is just about right on lobster traps in about 65feet of water where they are subjected to a pretty good current. I've tried long and short :smash: but whats the "standard" scope you guys are using. Thnks.

something like 3 times the depth.
|
Also- the stronger the current the bigger the bouy.

Long enough to catch my jigs:smash:

Cape your killing me! Thats what I've figured I was way short way short! I hear ya about the bigger bouys thats already on the menu for this spring. I took my traps out of pleasant bay 14 ft. and put them way outside 60 to 75 feet and did OUTSTANDING last year except for trouble with the bouys underwater at certain points during the tide. Looks like i gotta get a couple spools of line soon. :D

Traps
Jon.....been there done this. My suggestion would be 30' of line beyond what you need for the depth. Thats what I used and other than the usual a..h...s stealing my lobsters that length of line worked fine. Make sure before you put them in the water how other people lay out their traps. If no one is near you fine, but if there are other lobsters guys especially commercial guys they usually lay their pots in a pattern and if you drop yours contrary to how they drop theirs you may run into trouble. I dropped my one time and only once east west and the commercial guys laid their out north south. Needless to say pulling up three pots tied together by hand and cutting the lines was a tedious tiring adventure. I asked arond afterwards and one of the commercial guys was kind enough to point out my mistake. Have fun and enjoy the lobsters. Lstly think about this. The more line you attach the the pot the more line and time you'll spend pulling them in.

I think I'll try around thirty feet above and beyond I had them a little short last time was a pain with the tide running they'd sneak under nad I would have to time it right. I bought big bouys too 7x14 should help too.I've got no problem with commercial guys there right there but I put my stuff right in back of theirs so its out of the way theres no other recreational guys near me waters to deep, I like the work out and lack of a crowd not to mention lots of lobsters not found inshore.:D
