due to work rules i have to put a weeks vacation 1 month in advance.i like to fish the mackrel run in the spring , to live line for stripers ,on the south shore of ma. . last year i took the first full week of june and the mackrel were thin i had to work real hard for just a few macks ,when i got bait the striper fishing was great. this year i was thinking of taking the week of may22-28 anyone have any thoughs about those dates ? tide are good that week .

On the Water's TV show had a segment on mack fishing off the East end of the Cape Cod Canal. I believe they were fishing the first week of May. They had no trouble filling up their coolers.

Not sure if this helps you but it may give you a data point to consider. I've been fishing for mackerel off Seabrook (out of the Merrimack). According to last year's log I had my best mackerel day on Sunday 5/23. It seems as though your information is correct and the mackerel had likely gone by for you at that time last year.

Good luck.

Tough call. 2 and 3 years ago we got some big fish over 40 the week of june 1-7. Last year we got some big fish around May 25 or so. Do a search on the boat forum under "Memorial Day Massacre". The "massacre" lasted the whole week before that weekend. I got lucky as I was on vacation that week.

PS. I will be on vacation on the "right" week this year too.. I'll be out there everyday conditions are under 6' seas.

I always remembered them making the trek in the first 2 weeks of May.

Ma south shore usually the thickest is May 20-30. But the macs are usually around May 7 to June 15. Back in 96 the macs held till July 20, which was pissa.

As others have said best time for macs and offshore living biggens I shoot for last week in May or first week in june.

An old salt and very good fisherman told me that in RI. it is generally around May 4-11 .This of course can vary with sea temps etc but The first half of May is a good bet. The thing is they are usually just passing by and don't spend a lot of time here .

Mothers day to Memorial after that you are going to take your chances!!

I'd guess the Macs will leave earlier due to the amount of dogfish out there. It used to be the arrival of the bluefish that chased them north.
