Does anybody...
...still get amped up over Shad fishing?? I used to get pretty wild about catching them on the South Shore and really miss catching them. It seems to me they were the first really "worthy adversary" we had to get after in the Spring and man they could pull some line off! Just wondered if they still appeared...??? Should be right around the corner-

Around the corner of the snowbank that is due to arrive on Friday night George!:smash: Thoughts down Jupiter way may be on open water fishing but up here in the "Northlands" we are just hoping the snow melts by June!:D Shad sounds familiar...you been whispering in Slingahs ear?;)
|
yes the shad are still around, I don't fish them much but the herring run i fish we catch a shad now and then and it is a blast on herring tackle.
|
I still get a major blast from two or three shad on one sabiki rig on light rod.

Shad fishing :btu: .... hope to get Slingah and BigFish out this year......
|
I run into shad in the spring and the fall when i'm chasing schoolies... they like Cocohoe minnows and they love redgills.
One day last spring I caught more dhad than bass.. I call them mini-Tarpon. |
T/C those arn,t the same Shad --they are talking about the American Shad /your probably catching Hickory Shad ;)

[The Merrimack river in the Lawrence , No. Andover area gets a good shad run during May and June and the river has plenty of accessable shoreline. We fish them with 1/64, 1/8 shad darts with a couple pea weights. Last year there were plenty of fish and really nice size. If you have a small boat we fish stripers with live herring. Last year was just fair for the striper run because of a smaller than usual herring run. But the fish that were to be had were nice size 32,34,36 with a few big fish being taken. Boat access is just below the Lawrence Dam other tan that its a long and rocky trip up river from Haverhill. Give it a try its worth the trip.

Still climb over the wall every now and then in Holyoke for the spring shad run. Those fish are the stones, especially the fish up near six pounds. My buddy Dave LaPorte used to run a "shad festival" there every year. Lots of guys, drunk awards, kill your neighbor awards, golden hour and of course largest fish of the day. We would be all set and lined up at six am looking east across the river waiting for the start signal which was usually the sound of VanHalen's "everybody wants some" blaring out over the river. It was a ball. Best part was watching the drunks get helped back over the wall on ladders at the end of the day. It was a bonus if your car didn't get broken into while parked there.
Shad are "real" fish and fight like mini-tarpon, I love them. Occasionally we get a run in Scorton Creek and B-Harbor of Hickory shad as well. Jump tweo feet in the air when hooked.:D |

Anyone that tells you shad (american) arent fun to catch probably never caught one!!!! Dont think I would ever have the desire to eat one though:confused: Make sure if you catch them in this area you hide them or let them go quick or you will have "vultures" all around you. Its sad to see people sneaking off with TRASH BAGS FULL of shad..... |
someone told me
that those shad make for excellent cut bait....for stripers.
is that true? |
Tatoobob--- I usually keep fishing info to myself , but if someone on this site asks i'm more than happy to help them out. Besides Lawrences bad reputation usually keeps most fishermen away. Had the unpleasant experience of fishing next to Trevor Gowdy on the river , he just plowed through the boats that were anchored fishing for herring---he's a bonehead. If his father wasn't Kurt Gowdy he'd just be another mediocre fisherman.
