I've done it myself...several times!

Go with a friend, esp. if you're headed down to OBX. Driving gets a little tedious .

I think memeber 179 just posted saying they have started North. He hasn't seen any fish in almost 2 weeks.

Based on some other local fishing reports, not sure if the mass exodus has started yet. Picture is from last week and these fish are feeding on large baitfish. Check out the belly on the fish I circled in red!

Mass exodus north? Don't they have to spawn first?

Fishpart 03-15-2005 12:53 PM

Only 10 1/5 hours to VA beach. Lynnhaven Breachway (Inlet), Rudee Breachway.....There are charters from there as well.

There are a lot of other options that are a smidge closer than OBX.

Check out the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel. There is a fishing pier smack dab in the middle of it. Bring all food and water and arrangements to sleep in truck.

Dang, now you get me tempted.

Quotes/fishing reports from local papers, "Last week it appeared winter striper action at Oregon Inlet was winding down, but parties aboard boats based at Oregon Inlet Fishing Center scored with limit catches Sunday and Monday, fish weighing as much as 511/2 pounds."

SALTWATER

Chesapeake Bay/Ocean
Ken Neill reports Capt. Richard Bartlett, (757) 876-5376, had an afternoon charter last week that found a lot of big rockfish south of Sandbridge. The wind blew hard, but it was fine up next to the beach, where the fish were. Their three largest weighed in at 39½, 42 and 52 pounds. Reports indicate anglers still are finding big rockfish in the ocean and as far in as Deltaville.

Outer Banks
Leonard Nuchols reports fishing on the Outer Banks has picked up some this week. The water has warmed and was reported at 50 degrees at Hatteras Inlet on Monday. Strong southwest winds this week should push more warm water in from the Gulf Stream. The Cape Point area reports a few puppy drum and speckled trout on the south beach, along with the occasional striper. Ocracoke Island and Nags Head reported stripers caught on lures Monday, so some stripers still are around. Wednesday, the offshore boats out of Hatteras Inlet reported excellent catches of yellowfin tuna with scattered catches of dolphin and wahoo. They also had good catches of tuna Saturday. Strong winds along with the heavy surf have limited the days when the boats are able to get out. The piers on Hatteras Island are planning to open March 25 if damage caused by recent high winds and heavy surf can be repaired in time.

I made it to the OBX in 11 hrs. Like Wee Wee said the Bay Bridge tunnel has a large fishing pier on it. Plus many towns at the ends with access to water.
