Rope splicing??

How hard is it to do?? And if you don't splice what knot do you use for your anchor & bow lines??

thefishingfreak 03-24-2005 08:41 PM

very simple.
get a splicing needle from boat us and a small laminated instruction card there also.

It's easy. For three strand you don't need a fid (looks like a big needle). Braid on braid is a PIA and you do need the fid. Lots of how-to on the web. Here's an example:

Thanks guys, But do to nerve damage in my hands I will not be able to do it. But I can tie knots no problem.
Maybe I can find someone to make it up for me??

Just saved that site to my favorites. I need to setup a new anchor this spring as well. Believe it or not I lost 2 last year.

thefishingfreak 03-25-2005 03:27 PM

yes JOE,it does require alot of finger strength and usually cramped hands the next day.
find one of those grumpy old sailors that walk the dock all summer long looking for someone to talk to{usually named Skip} and give him a few of millwalkie's finest and he'll probably set you up with all the splices you need.
i think boat us will do custom splices? they probably just ship the lines out to Skip :uhuh:

Mike's right on. have an old salt do it..
I'm too lazy, just use a Bowline

StripinLine 03-26-2005 10:02 AM

splices when do you need them by?

if we could neet some place and you give me the ropes, i could do it for you.
how many do you need done. if just a few I could do it right there..
not much free time right now but let me know..PM if you want it done not to soon..

you can buy anchor line, bow or spring lines already already spliced!!!

Mr. Sandman 03-29-2005 04:37 PM

All good boaters should know a few splices!! :) If you can tie an albright knot you have the skills to splice.

Its not hard, teach yourself the eye splice and backsplice at a minimum. You will be able to customize you slip lines perfectly. Just don't let the guys on the dock see you splicing lines or you will have a pile of them to do! :laugha: Really!!!

The trick is pick out some decent soft 3-strand nylon line. Don't use the stiff old stuff that has been outdoors for 5 or 6 years. (BTW, you can "soften your stiff lines by putting them in your washer machine and soaking them in fabric softener.)

It also doesn't hurt to wash themonce in a while in detergent folowed by fabric softner. It will make them last a lot longer.

Sonds like a job for the laundramat . . . I can see her face now "Honey, can you throw these in the wash - warm water, gentle cycle - easy on the fabric softner :whackin:
