Question about a merc 30
The motor runs great but when i get past about 1/3 throttle the engine revs up but im not going anywhere. ITs like a tranny slip on a vehicle. Its gotta be something going on with my prop. I took it off today and looked for any crap in there and it was free of debris. Any idea as to what is causing this? Thanks for any help, she is heading in the water in a couple weeks and the trolling motor just doesnt cut it.

Sounds like a spun prop hub. Sometimes Ok until you try to pick up speed. Take the prop to a prop shop anmd get the hub replaced.

don't mean to ask the obvious, but is your engine allt the way down?
|
Yeah its all the way down. I put it in the lake today and it kept doing the same thing so i have to send it out. They said 2-3 week turnaround for a re-hub, they have to send it to RI.

Dito the prop hub...
Buy a new prop... have the old one fixed and keep it as a spare. |
Positive Triple ditto on the prop hub. In case you are unaware there is a rubber %$%$%$%$ing between the hub and prop designed to fail when you hit something. So you don't damage more of the lower unit, which usually doesn't work as good as planned. Over time the rubber gets dry rotted and spins when you want to go fast. Like MTC said get a new prop, repair old and save as spare for next time.

Whoa,
Not too sure what I wrote behind rubber but I know it wasn't bad! Try this, Rubber B-u-s-h-i-n-g. |
Thanks a lot guys.

Same thing happened to my 30 yamaha last year, I thought it was a cable issue. Turned out to be a carb issue. Cost $ a couple bucks for gum out.

It also could be stripped splines either in the camshaft or the prop shaft.
