Where to mount transducer
2 Attachment(s)
Well, I rigged the outboard & controls, got her running nice, sanded and painted the bottom, installed a blige inspection hatch & new bilge pump, and a bunch of other little stuff here and there.
Now I want to install my new GPS/Fishfinder (garmin 188c). First question. Where on transom should I mount the transducer? See pics. Boat is a 1970 Mako 19. Centerline length - 18'7". Beam - 8'. Hull Draft - 8". Transom height - 25" (raised from 20"). Power - 150 HP Evinrude FFI. Remaining projects: Drill new scuppers install fixed radio fix or replace boot stripe install windshield install new horn (later in the summer) wire new panel r&r rub rail |
I put mine on with silicone first and took it out to test it.
I had to move it a couple times to get it right before I screwed it in. |

that boat has Mojo... tears right now... |
put it here.
on the same plane as the cavatation plate of the outboard at full speed. |

Zac,
Nice ride! IMO the above cited location is the best spot. I can't tell from the photo but If there is a strake, step or separation strip that runs along the bottom to the transom.. put the transducer just inboard of that. If you put it outboad you could loose the signal during maneuvers. Inboard of the strake is a region of positive pressure. On the outboard side of the strake can be a turbulent location. Good luck with everything. |
I got a little too drunk one night and tried to mount a transducer.
The electric shock was a real kick in the nuts, if you know what I mean. :devil2: |
right through the bottom of the hull about a third of the way from the stern.

Probably need a diff. transducer to go thru hull though. |
If your set on the transom mount ducer, do what Roger said. In the past, I've had problems at hi speed with those, but you may not.I put a ducer in that you mount in the bilge but not thru the hull. It's an Airmar P79 and it works real well for me, garmin has them and you might even be able to swap it. Just a thought.

I mounted it on the transom, pretty much where ff's arrow points, inboard of the first step, as mr s. suggested.
I went with the transom mount so I could get temp. As stated earlier, the 188c gets speed from the gps. I thought about the shoot through hull method, and researched it, but decided on the transom mount so I can get temps. I am not that concerned about readings at running speed... Thanks for everybody's input. __Zac__ |
