704 drag washers
can anyone tell me the correct order in which they are supposed to into the spool. when i cleaned them this winter i thought i had put them back the right way but apparently I haven't. after i set on a fish, they become herky-jerky. thanks in advance....

Here is the schematics for the 704. An extremely light amount of super lube grease helps smotth them out too.

One hex-shaped metal washer goes into the base of the spool. Next comes either a HT-100 fiber or Teflon, followed by the round metal with the keyed (ie, flat sided) hole, followed by another fiber/Teflon, the second hex shaped metal, a final fiber, and the second round keyed metal one.

thank you both very much

The HT-100s are the fiber ones--some black carbon-like material. The Teflon is white. Doesn't matter which order they go in the mix. The important ones are the metal ones. Putting the metal ones in the wrong order won't make it jerky---it'll make it ratchet down tight and lock up.
Try a light coating of good drag grease. The jerkiness might also be due to the metal ones being scored and needing replacement. |
thanks again...

If you are replacing the washers with new ones and its still jerkey, the shaft that the spool slides on probably has corrosion on it.. take a scotch brite pad and go to town with it for a while till it becomes nice and shiney.. then all will be well :D
