My girlfriend caught her very first striper ever tonight.A nice chunky 25"er on an old yellow beatup scud needlefish.

She's hooked.

The Scuds are my good wood.... one of the best producing needlefish made.... IMHO

Yeah my friend was in a shop and some guy came in looking for some Hab's and Tattoo's. Needless to say the store did'nt sell them. The owner pointed to some scuds and the guy says oh those won't catch. Little did that guy know those plugs have caught so many fish, and big fish at that. Scuds are pretty much the only needle in my bag.

Sorry these plugs are so top secret that the builder has asked that no pictures be taken of the Scud. Any breach in security could bring a downfall of the striped bass in Newport and other parts unknown.

Should not be too hard to find - Aquidneck Island people seldom venture far because they are afraid of the troll that lives under the bridge - they have to be on-island someplace

I guess I should've said new wood instead of good wood as I also have had success with scuds.Not the spit and polish of other plugs but they do work.The
finish tends not last to long so I often sand them down give them a basic paint job and a couple coats of lacquer and they're ready to go again.

The plug was so beat up she thought I put it on just so she'd have something to throw.I told her its was a easy to work and the reason it looks like it does is because I'd caught many fish on it.And about 10mins later she caught her first fish.

There's only three ways to get 'em. Two tackle shops and Mark himself.

I think the emphasis is function over form and loading them with a little lead slug in the tail helps, too -

Yeah, Mark's business address is 'on the rocks' - which is where I saw him a coupla weeks ago - and outside of Sam's in Middletown, the other place you can usually get them is out of the fish tote in Mark's trunk :hihi:

On the contrary. I don't think the scud is ugly, the time is just not put into putting the clearcoat on. But once any plug hits the rocks the plug is gonna get beat up. Yeah some could be heavier, but you just have to examine before you choose your plug. The scud is a prime example of a plug that is basically homemade and catches just as much and sometimes more than the big money plugs out there. Are those pretty plugs out there worth spending $20-25. For some people they are, they're like artwork. But for me I've learned over the years that when the fish are biting on plugs anything that pulses in the water will catch you fish, whether it's $20 or $10.
