Not A Real Whiz With Reels But.....

I got a Penn Slammer 460 that is in need of a good cleaning and some grease. Took it apart and was wondering what you reel guys use to clean the old dry grease out with and what kind/brand of grease do you use to re-lube? I got Penn muscle grease but I don't think thats the same as what is in it! Any help, input or comments would be appreciated. Thanks.

I like to use engine degeaser. The particular brand I have at the moment is called "super tech" which I bought at wally world.I would imagine any brand would do.I spray it in there and let it foam up and sit then a little help with a soft toothbrush then a another dowsing and let it drain for awhile and dry.

I've been doing it on my shimanos without any probs.

Larry, if you don't want to use solvents because of noxious fumes or whatnot, use gojo hand cream (the white stuff in the round tub) to remove old grease from gears and the like. What's great about this is the gojo bonds to the grease like soap does, and everything washes out in the sink.

A toothbrush helps when you're scrubbing with the stuff.

If you want to be really thorough, soak the gojo'd and washed parts in a bit of 70% isopropyl rubbing alcohol to remove any small amount of residue and evaporate the water.

Penn Reel grease on (cleaned) moving parts is fine. If you want to pack the reel housing with grease (for extra waterproofing), use marine grease which has the viscosity of motor oil. There might be a bit of leakage but it should be minor.

Need reel service? :hee:

I use the simple green to degrease. The Penn grease is fine on gears, then drop of 3-in-1 oil on bearings.
Lemme know if ya need help. :call:
