Who would you fish with?
If you could go back in time who would you most like to fish with? who are the surf ledgends that have influenced you the most?
For me it is Tim Coleman, who I owe much of what I know There are many more surf ledgends , name your favorite and who if you could team up with them would be your choice! Of all of these I have fished many times with Tim Coleman and he is a great guy, tim still fishes today as much as ever. Tim has a 60 and 3 50s from block island. Second Question! If you were hot and heavy fishing in the late 70s and 80s where would you rather be at that time 1)Block Island 2) Cape Cod My choice hands down! Block Island, that place was smokin them and it was never talked about! |
Arnold Laine, or #^^^^&ie Samms, or better yet, both... if your ever up at Nelsons, look at all the old black and whites... looked like those 2 had it down.
late 70's early 80's... Cape, if it was Monomoy :D especially late summer/fall of 81.... :D |
Stan Gibbs for sure. Also Charlie Cinto :kewl:
I'd love to have been on the beach with Tony Stetzko the night he caught Bertha. It would be great to fish with all of those guys. 2. Block Island for sure. |
None of the above.
Chet and the islanders. ;) |
Pete Zaface
I love NY waters |

My choice would be the Mad Russian, Sergey de Somov. He racked up eye-popping catches everywhere from Sandy Hook to the Cape, and almost everywhere in between. Won the MV Derby 2 or 3 times, always with fish over 50. The Block would be more my style. Big water, rocks, tough fish in tough terrain. Especially when I was in my 20s. Nowadays, I'd probably rather be a sand sissy :ss: |
Stan Gibbs hands down....Flaptail #2...when we going?
|
there's two here in town..one boat ,one beach...that could and would fish the paint's off of most....when the fish weren't on the bite these two would still fill the truck and boat every trip out.But they arn't chest beater's so you wouldn't know them even if I typed their names.
You callin steve campo old :hihi: the cape for sure.. |
Campo, just to see all his plugs.
|
u mean had
|
I want to fish with Capesams! :heybaby:
|
I have to plead ignorance to most of the names on the list. With that being said, I'd pick Steve McKenna. He's always more than helpful everytime I see him and I'm sure I'd learn leaps and bounds about RI Fishing.
|
Not sure how many BI Guys you all know but another great out there was Mat Squilante who has since gave up fishing, he smoked the doors off the bass, he was one of the first out there with charlie dodge that found out just how good the block is. Even though I am not 20 anymore I still love rocky beaches, that type of structure gets my blood going, nothing like seeing the water make up near a nice boulder, you just know there is a bass there! the block is gorgeous bass water for sure. There were many new york guys out there who smoked the fish in 80s also, I am sure DZ Can pass on some more names
|
Steve was out on the Block in heyday and was as good as anyone else! Steve is right up there with any surf ledgend. He is a great fisherman. I dont mention him much because I fish with him all the time so for me , he is just one of the guys, by the way, steve and I will be on the Block july 6th for the new moon! Cant wait.

JohnR...On his boat.... :uhuh:
Hi John. :wavey: |
Charlie Murat, Dave Hammock, The Pergo brothers. George Heavey, #^^^^&y Conoyer and the others from the old Murats in No. Smithfield RI. They fished the Backbeach the right way back in the 70s. I fished with most of them and those guys could fish. 2 or 3 days straight with no sleep. Boy we did a number. :bc:
|
Daignault made himself a legend with photos and good story telling, plus his kids caught most of his fish for him :hihi:
I chose tim coleman. He sounds extremely humble. |
anybody from this site...I'm getting tired of fishing alone.
I would love to fish with the cape beach guys.....capesams, flap, BF, BM, RM....ect..ect |
You know, George Calzone's name should be on the list. i fished with George and he was 80 then. I think he is in his mid to high 80s now and still fishing the Back. Got a 63 lber to his credit.
|
yes lots of names could not ad them all! how about Al Pellini he got a 60 out on block also
|
Pie?
George Carlezon (sounds like carlson) ? P-town George... yeah, he knows his stuff for sure.
|
Cool thread. ever since I read his book striper surf I would have to go with Frank D., but if I'm on the vineyard I would have to throw Jim, alias the Sandman, onto the list.
|
I think if I were fishing w/ frank I'd want to be doing it from a beach chair with open ears he can spinn a good story :gu:
|
How come Charlie Moore isn't on the list? :laughs:
|
Campo. I've got a few of his plugs
Block all day. |
Block, you and Steve. John could tag along as well :bl2:
|
I would fish with some reallly hot younger babes
but since thats not on my wife agenda . I would like to fish with arnold lane , andy lemar , kib bramhall or jack yee |
I would have to say Janet Messineo and it would definately have to be the Cape.
|
