Spot burning

Ok here is another fun pole, no answer honestly! I know not everyone here has a halo! :laugha:

eelman 06-01-2005 12:21 PM

I have to be honest, when I started there was no way I could resist! no way at all. But I have learned you lose friends that way and as I get older, I realize there are plenty of hotspots and FISH HAVE FINS!

eelman 06-01-2005 12:25 PM

:laugha: :laugha: :laugha: I KNEW IT! tHATS GREAT i LOVE THE HONESTY!

jsullivan 06-01-2005 12:27 PM

depends on the person who took me there or how I got the info

When I worked in an archery shop I would see this new hunter come in and be ready to plunk down his $$$ on a bow because he just saw a HUGE buck
well I would help him get it ready and the all the whyle be workin him to find everything I could about what he saw or where he was hunting. I'd give him a few spots to try out and soon enough he'd tell me where he had seen deer and I'd check the area out

If I respect the person I respect the spot

eelman 06-01-2005 12:40 PM

Thats a good way of putting it respect is important but what about if the place is private? so, even if you hated the guy but he took you to his honey hole and that place was only accesible via private property you would still try and get in? thats called USING someone. If I dont respect someone, then I could care less where he gets his bass. Tough to be fishing next to people you dont like.. Anyway its interesting to hear different perspectives.

Bronko 06-01-2005 12:41 PM

I like the honesty too. I have been taken to a spot or two that produces. Generally its someone I know pretty well that takes me. I always ask them straight up if they'd be pissed if they showed up and I was there already. I DON'T burn their spots to anyone else. Wouldn't think of it, I live by schoolyard rules.

jsullivan 06-01-2005 12:54 PM

PRIVATE PROPERTY IS A WHOLE DIFF. BALLGAME AND DEMANDS THE UTMOST RESPECT ALLWAYS

JeffH 06-01-2005 12:55 PM

I only go if invited which is why I haven't been back to that spot #^&#^&#^&#^&#^&#^& took me to, that and it is too far a walk...........

Nebe 06-01-2005 12:56 PM

If the person was kind enough to show me how to get there and how to fish it, i would ask if they minded if I go down on my own.. i would also ask if they mind that i bring someone...

For example...
a few nights ago i met up with someone i fish with from time to time. Over the winter I was granted permission to fish a piece of property that is really fishy, so i gave him directions and I had him meet me down there... On the way out he says that he cant wait to go back and is planning to go back. This puts me in a very awkward position because i am responsible for this person tresspassing.... I have permission and he doesnt.. I could care less if he goes down there, but I have opened up a dangerous can of worms if he decides to bring anyone else in there and then that person brings someone who trashed the place and tells everyone about it... friendships have been ruined over less........

fishaholic18 06-01-2005 12:59 PM

I would ask if he minded if I went alone. I wouldn't even think of taking anyone else. Just my opinion.

He might not know any better and would benefit from you explaining the situation, namely that he must respect your spot if he ever wants to fish with you again. If he balks and is disagreable, it's better to know the quaity of his character now, than after you give up more information.

Eben, it's not that big of a deal. Any of your friends have permission to fish in my KOI pond. Just make sure they catch and release and NO CORN!!!

Other than private land with written or verbal access, there are no "secret spots".

Anyone with half a brain and a map or chart can find where to fish.
All that matters is if and when the fish are there. :D

reelecstasy 06-01-2005 01:25 PM

I have literally taken a pledge about spots I have been brought to. It is definatley a game of respect. I would ask if they minded if I went alone, but I would never burn a spot I was taken to by bringing a friend or whatever. Things need to be earned IMHO... It is all about Respect....

Consider this spot, BURNED. :laugha:

eelman 06-01-2005 01:43 PM

Hey eben your in the minority! You must have voted that way as a joke!

vineyardblues 06-01-2005 01:57 PM

Been fishing a long time, never said or was told about spot burning until the internet, this site and a few others. I have fun teaching people and takeing friends fishing. Sometimes we catch other times zippo. One place is as good as any I tell people,Just get out and dunk an eel :)
I think people take this way 2 far . my 2 cents

VB

ps.tell steve campo I was asking ><>

same here

The Dad Fisherman 06-01-2005 02:29 PM

I would probably ask 1st ......But I would definitely keep it to myself.

Mike P 06-01-2005 02:41 PM

If it's public property, I don't think I'd expect a guy not to go on his own. It would never occur to me to say, "now, don't ever come back here without me" if it was public and fairly well known. What I would expect is for him to use his head and not blab to 15 of his closest friends or the members of his fishing club.

BigFish 06-01-2005 03:13 PM

Honestly...I voted that I might go back on my own...if its a publicly accessed area! I would ask first of course but I would not give up the spot to anyone. I have been to a couple spots with folks that I have not given up to my regular fishing buddies!

Now who wants to take me to their honey hole? I will never tell! :hidin:

TheSpecialist 06-01-2005 04:19 PM

There is only one place I have been shown that I would not go back to with out being invited, the place where there were sprinkles in the air, and any place like it....

snake slinger 06-01-2005 05:52 PM

if i took a friend to a spot i wouldnt mind if he went back as long as it was just him.i wouldnt take someone to a spot if i didnt want them there

Slingah 06-01-2005 07:13 PM

loose lips sink ships...if your gonna tell someone about a spot...ya have to expect them to go there without you.......and if fishies are there....forgetaboutit
private land is a different story

capesams 06-01-2005 08:34 PM

many factor 's involved in this one for sure.. if there was a few well known local sharpies that you've been trying to get to know and show you[even for one spot] finaly get your one shot,,your dang right you'd keep your trap shut even to your best friend..knowing that if you were caught back at that spot alone by them your name would be mudd and your be out on your ear after all the time you spent trying to get in with these guy's....

I still have a spot or two that no one fishes but me[under the cover of darkness] and I won't give them up to anyone,, I tried being nice to a few I thought would keep it to themselves...WRONG!

call me grumpy..but I've been burned, but will never burn another...old school 101.

spence 06-01-2005 09:19 PM

Private land is tricky as there's a lot of tresspassing in surf fishing anyway.

But if you have been given personal permission to use private land, it's almost an implicit contract of confidence. I'd at least ask they don't fish it without you lest you loose your access and nobody fishes it :skulz:

Capesams nailed it ......it's a CODE, it's about trust and integrity.
If someone puts you on a spot, you keep it to yourself. If you are into fish at that local.........you keep it off the radar screen and don't spill your guts.

All it takes is one person to open their trap and every Tom, #^&#^&#^&#^& & Harry will be standing in that spot and you will be on the shore with your thumb in your butt. If you want your name in the toilet, with a bad reputation to follow ....... go ahead and burn away and then assume the consequences of your actions.
