screw plugs I'm eeling-

hows this sound-

rod- gsb 1201-L

reel- Penn 560 liveliner

line- 20 lb Berkley Big Game

80 lb spro power swivel

leader- 50 lb berkley big game

hook- Gamakaksu 5/0 octopus

I was eeling with my Vs 250 and 200's..... didnt have much sucess to hit ratio.

likwid 06-03-2005 01:49 PM

I'd do braid... more sensitive.

Nebe 06-03-2005 01:59 PM

I was doing the braid thing, problem was that when I was retrieving my eel at a slow pace, the braid would hang up all the time. braid sinks- mono floats.

JeffH 06-03-2005 02:03 PM

Been using braid for years with eels, no issues. Hold your rod higher.......

SeaWolf 06-03-2005 02:07 PM

it depends on how large of an eel you will throw. the 1201L doesn't have the power to handle large eels. it will load nice tho. 1201m is better for typical to larger eels. also, it can turn/handle a fish easier. now, cutting the 1201L may be an option too, but i like an eel rod to be at least 10'. 1204, same deal as 1201L.

MrHunters 06-03-2005 02:08 PM

i had good luck on plugs last night :)
although I cant say ive tryed eels yet...shhhhhhhh dont tell anyone :behead:

Mike P 06-03-2005 02:34 PM

How much 20 does that Liveliner hold? I'd want at least 160 yards in most places, maybe 200 minimum in a breachway or another place with good current. I can tell you that the 560 Slammer holds about 275 yards of 40# Power Pro.

1L blanks have changed from time to time over the years. I had one of the first 120 1L blanks (and everytime I mention this, someone asks, so I'll beat it to the punch--YES, I'm sure it was a 1L and not a 1M because 1) Lami didn't make a 10' 1M at the time, and 2) I bought the blank right from Merrick Tackle when they were still in Merrick and I did read the label ;) ). It was somewhere between today's 1L and the 1M in stiffness. It was a great eel rod for years until I got my hands on a Fisher. But I guess this doesn't help ya any, just rambling :spin: Point is, I guess, that the 1M would be a better all-around choice :humpty:

Rest of it sounds OK. Some guys will tell you to use a 6/0 hook, but I caught a lot of bass for a lot of years eelin' with the 5/0 bronze Mustad.

Bill L 06-03-2005 02:39 PM

Why the Penn Liveliner over the VS? Do you plan on switching to the baitrunner to let the fish run longer?

Nebe 06-03-2005 02:40 PM

the spool says 120 yards.. and I'm down with that.. i dont think i will get spooled, although it would be great for bragging rights- it HAD to be a 50 :hihi: a nice tight drag, and i shoudl be all set, unless I loose a lot of line on a snag or if a fish breaks me off.

I have a M and an L, so I will interchange the 2 depending on eel size and conditions.

Last night: Plugs-8
Eels-0

eelman 06-03-2005 02:46 PM

6/0 mustad 94150 :wavey: the best eels hook ever made!

Steve K 06-03-2005 02:50 PM

I like mono for eeling too. I have a 1201L that is my eeling rod. I don't want something stiffer because I don't want to cast off any eels. I can only think of one time that I missed a hookset with an eel on my 706 and 1201L setup. I like 6/0 Gamakatsu live bait hooks. I have been using big game leaders from 50 - 80 lbs. I am going with flouro this year.

:kewl: thinkin conv, but I would love to toss a few with yours first...all that batson talk gots me nervous :rollem: not to mention need a glass stick for the ditch...

Saltheart 06-03-2005 03:35 PM

I like the whole set up except the hook size. I would recommend 7/0 or even 8/0 94150. I think the Lami 120 1L is perfect for eeling normal shore waters. in a current like the breachways or a river you need the 1M.

I think on a spinner you want some whiplash or powerpro braid.

I don't think your success ratio has anything to do with your reel. It should improve with bigger hooks. Also , despite the slow retrieve (very slow) which can lull your senses , you have to be very , very aware and on the edge to do eels well.

capesams 06-03-2005 03:39 PM

were are all the conv. guy's  1088...400 cal....17lb. silver thread...5/0 mustad.......maybe missed hookin 3 fish in 50 ???

snake slinger 06-03-2005 03:46 PM

yea but there endangered

Saltheart 06-03-2005 04:16 PM

Just commenting on his set up. My set up is conventional a loomis 1266 with a Calcutta 400 spooled with 35 Lb spectron. I use a 30 LB Ande pink leader and 7/0 or 8/0 mustads. If for some reason I feel I need distance , I change the Calcutta 400 and put on a BG 6500CL or a 6500CS Mag Elite.

Yes... retrieve eel with bait runner on... bass takes eel, runs with it, click and set hook. on 2 differnt nights I had bass grab my eel and run with it for at lest 5 or 6 feet and not swallow it.

Slipknot 06-03-2005 05:17 PM

If I don't use my Lami SB1213M spinner, I go with my XRA1205 conventional, BG7000 reel, 30 lb magnathin if I don't use braid or 20 lb big game in some spots. I use a Mustad 94150 6/0 hook also.

I am using plugs till the fall or untill the m word gets too thick.

afterhours 06-03-2005 05:21 PM

can you reel with baitrunner on? on my shimano 4500 it engages when you crank it, same with some other b-runners i've seen. i like my old sabre 1088 with either 4500 emblem or vs. rod will handle a good sized snake.

I'll eat my hat if you break that 1088 :hee: I beat the crap out of mine and have landed a lot of fish on it..it even survived a ride in the bed of Clammer's truck more than once....and it's been flawless.

No need for the Flouro at night, Sure, OK for daytime but totally unneeded at night...

My goto was/is a Calcutta 400 or 6500ME with at least 20# BG Green and more recently 50 power pro on a 1088 Batson or befier 1088 All Star when needed... Tried fishing spinning for eels last week - did not feel good at all...

fishaholic18 06-03-2005 05:33 PM

I've never been a fan of circle hooks but I gave them another shot a few nights ago, I think the key is to not set the hook, I put the rod in a sand spike with the drag set just tight enough for the fish to be able to pull it. I had perfect hook sets, corner of the lip every time.

Fishpart 06-03-2005 05:46 PM

Like my All Star 1265 with the ABU 6500 with smoothies, it can stop a 30# 6 year old in a full run with a casting weight in his hand. 35# spectron. Mustad 6/0 gets them in the roof of the mouth 80% of the time. No swivel 30# leader albrighted to main line. If I'm in current All Star 1266 with ABU7000 and 50# spectron and 40# leader....

Once I use up the 50 hooks I have I'll be interested in trying circles. Joe Lyons sparked my interest and he claims to have quite a bit of success fishing eels on 11/0 Mustad circles...
