KEEPER
Hello.
Me & my son have never caught a keeper. We have came damn close, but nothing 28" over bigger. Any tips? tricks? Are we doing something wrong here? Or do we need to fish, fish, fish, and keeping trying? I'm just wondering if our setup is right: 20lb > swivel > leader/circle hook Should I increase the leader length? I mean I'm use the stock leader/hook from the bait stores. |
Don't feel bad - if it wasn't for a couple of friendly guys with boats, I would still be keeperless. I am still keeperless from shore - but I haven't been trying to hard this year :(

Don't worry about it you don't need to rush I've been there before. Everytime I see somebody posting their pics on the site made me frustrated. So here's what I did I tried different places shore, jetties, rocks and after a month I landed my first 28" keeper. The fun of having a fish hooked on your rod with adrenalin pumpin is enough to make my day. At least your havin fun with the kids that's the best part nothing can replace that.
Keep your lines tight.... |
I know fishing with my kids is awesome. Thanks for the replies :)

Keep your hook in the water and they will come. One thing that will improve your odds is to be sure to get out there when we get stormy weather and white water..the bassies love that. (of course be very careful around big waves)

50-100 lbs test spro sqwivel barrel, 2-3 feet long fluro/mono leader, 5/0 circle hook.

Night time is the right time. Fish when ever you have a chance. Go to popular spots and watch others and pay attention to the ones who are catching.

Sounds good :) Thanks again for the replies.
I use fresh herring chunked. Is this the best for the big fish? |
EEL and lots of EEL......

EELSSSSSSSSSSS

Eels....hmmm never tried them. I have heard a lot of war stories about them tangling the line/sinker. How would I fish them? They cost 1.50 per live eel from my local bait store. Need more information on eels.

I went fishing today, and got a lot of schoolies. Biggest being 21", and very fat. All fish released with any problem. No pictures though. I need to pickup a cheap camera to tos in my tackle box.
I was using this setup: 20lb Trilene XL clear line > Fishfinder 2oz sinker > Swivel > normal size leader with a circle hook. Each cast was fish on. It was fun, but no keepers yet. In due time :) I was using fresh herring. I switched from my 10' rod to my 8'. Big difference. I was missing tons of hits on the bigger rod. It's more then likely, because I'm used to the 8'. I haven't gave up on the 10' rod just yet though :) |

EELS.....This is what I'm hearing. I don't fish a lot at night now. I used to, but things have changed. Will EELS work as good during the day?
