chum line , when to bail ?

i am most likley going to do some chunking this weekend ( from a boat) my question is when do you give up on a chum line if there is no action , i do not chunk much so i tend to fish the whole tide how does everyone else do it ?

i've only gone out chumming twice for big scary fish.....And both those times we didnt want to move because it would have been a waste of the 2 hours of chumin'
What was especially frustration was when big deep sea charter boats would set up shop right in our line...grrr did that make us mad.
