Red Tide killing Terns?

Interesting read... been told by some folks to not keep stripers for the table for a while,, not a bad idea.. they eat clams and crabs and such.

Can't imagine the algae could infect the meat on a fish, as long as it's handeled properly...but what do I know?

Now we just need to figure out how to kill the friggin' seals!!!! They have fouled up the fishing on the outer beaches beyond belief! :exp:

If the seals don't croak from eating the Stripers, then we should be pretty safe too I would imagine.

Don't you just love seals with their big cow eyes and the way they play in the water, especially when you're on some good fish and they show up to make the day.

Don't you just want to hug them and pet them and then grab a bat with spikes in the end of it and make their day to by beating the living :eek: out of them ... oh, wait what am I saying, I like seals.

But I have heard of somwe dofs that have died?? from sxcrewing around with the dead birds that are all over the place.

Red tide, clams, and stripers
 

Clams and oysters are filter feeders and strain the photoplankton (algae such that cause red tide) and accumulate it in their flesh in high density. If you eat the shell fish (or if a tern does) it may be harmful. But unless the striper is feeding exclusively on shell fish, it is unlikley that they could develop a sufficiently high concentration of red tide algae to harm you (the fish itself would die first).

But maybe better safe than sorry...and practice a little more catch & release :)

For me, I'll focus on fluke for the table, and stripers for the recreation.

I kept a keepa last week from the race while fishing with Bigfish & Afterhours..A few people helped to consume it and so far everyone is OK... :kewl: :happy:

I heard that since whales are filter feeders that the red tide could effect them.
