VMC 9626 4X trebles, how strong are they ???
Anyone know what lb test the vmc 9626 4X permasteel hooks are ??
I have them on plugs from 1/0 thru 4/0 and on friday night I had a big fish straighten out a 2/0 and I did not think I had my drag too tight. From what I understand the 4x rating basically means its 4 times stronger than the normal strength of that material in that diameter, which seems kind of meaningless as I don't know how strong that is either ??? Anyone know how much weight the different sized vmc's can handle??? I was using 30 lb braid and a 40lb shock leader, which had a small breakaway clip. My plugs have 5.5 H split rings and I was suprised to see the hook fail before any of the other components. |
what i can tell you is that on bombers size 1 4x are way better than the ones on there but im sure You know that.
I had a bass open an eye on a vmc siwash it was i think a 4/0 never seen that b4 im not sure what refrence point they use I use the 4x also in size 1 on up i think some fish when they have a few trebles in them can make one bend out due to it being awkward at angles and also working aginst the plug notice (rear belly treble) your pulling one way and bass another |
I agree with Bassmaster, stripers just do weird things to hooks sometimes. I have a 6X strong 4/0 VMC treble on display in the shop twisted like you would not believe.
I've been a little suspicious that the 9626PS isn't as strong as it used to be, but when I ran a poll on another site most people felt they are as strong as they ever were, but that they might rust a bit more quickly then they used to. As to what 4X is relative to, I have no idea. Bassmaster, keep your eyes open for a UPS truck starting tomorrow. ;) |
Talked to someone at V.M.C. and Nothing has been changed the way the hooks are made, The difference in say a 2x,3x ,4x ,or 6x hook is only the wire diamerter , Thicker diamerter stronger hook. The Drag and Braid can be a big factor in the bending of the hook. Some have caught OVER 90lb GT's with no PROBLEMS

Ok, if 4x is the diameter of the wire then is a 1/0 4x as strong as a 3/0 4x, or is the 4x saying a 1/0 4x is 4 times as strong as their 1/0 1X ??
I'd swear looking at them that the wire gets gradually bigger with each hook size. The treble in question was a tail hook, the belly treble was fine, but 1 prong of the tail treble was bent right back. |
interseting read, thanks Pete
Hi habs:) what was a 1st for me was a siwash being opend at the eye it was a basswood lure, I forget the size hook he uses on his small surfsters wich is a great plug btw. I was into some real nice fish Code:
whats this do |
I personally swore by VMC hooks for the longest time... but this year unless i got a bad bunch.. i've had nothing but headaches with them... trebles in 3/0 and 4/0 in particular... last year i had a 5/0 siwash hook break as i was bringing a fishing thru a wave the force of the undertow and weight of the fish pulled hard enough to snap the eye of the siwash... never had that happen either.. know it broke cause my buddy caught the piece of hook eye in his rip stop jacket that wasn't really rip stop.. hehe a bad crimp me thinks it wasn't that big a fish maybe high 20's...
but back to the trebles they aren't holding their edge like they used too and i've already replaced a few for looking like them excalibar hooks... hehe I might just go back to mustads put a better point on and replace them every other outing.... |
