Wow thats awsome Saltheart. It must take a while to tie one huh? Maybe some day I will give that a try too.
|
what exactly does something like that weigh ??
...never flyfished or held a fly....well not that those kinds anyways...:D |
Nice fly. Reminds me of a Ray's Fly.
|
Nice work....Someday I'll be close to making one that nice.
|
Nice fly Saltheart (great teaser too :ss: )
HEY FW!!!!!! I did not show him that fly and he didn't steal it from me, your secret is still safe :smash: :smash: :smash: |
Yes Jaiem , its like a Ray's Fly. Graded white to green. I add the special flash material (When you get it , swim the thing in the bathroom sink in low light , the flash is erie.) , the herl and the chartruese hackle. same concept though as ray's fly.
I don't know what it weighs. I use it mostly as a teaser so weight doesn't matter there. I have thrown it on a 10 wt fly rod though. All the weight is in the hook. I thought of using a #1 instead of 1/0 but like the bigger hook. Fishpart , I thought yours came out good. You gotta start somewhere and yours definitely don't look like a typical beginners effort. |
With the proper training even :smash: a guy like me can learn. Having a teacher that can demonstrate the correct technique and expects excellence also helps.
|
Specialist , it doesn't take that long to tie them. The trick is to get all set up with all you materials out and at hand , and then just go. I enjoy tying. Its relaxing and gives you a good sense of accomplishment when you catch a fish on something you tied rather than store bought.
Speaking of store bought , a similar fly sells for about $6.50 in many places now. I ended up with 2 short cause I only had enough 3 d eyes to make ten. Now I need two more and no eyes. I went to Murats yesterday and he was out of the 3D eyes. Worst comes to worst , I'll use the same size red eyes but prismatic rather than 3 D. Still looks good. Oh yes , in case someone hasn't figured this out for themselves ,its a sand eel imitation. |
Folk's,
Who is "Ray" of Ray's Fly? Is he the same guy from the Methuen, area?:o |
;) VERY NICE, how come all the fly guys HANG out on this page?
CAN'T WAIT TO USE IT "good luck good tyin" |
The Ray is Ray Bondarew. I don't know where he's from. Did he write Striper Moon?
Mine isn't truly "Ray's Fly". Its just a similar graded pattern. His has no hackle , no eye , and I believe no flash. His is also more yellow while mine is greenish. I think his is aimed to imitate spearing , mine is a sand eel. |
Ken Abrahams wrote Striper Moon.
Ray was from RI, fished alot in the Newport area. He recently died. |
Yes, Ken did Striper Moon, he does a fantastic seminar on emulating what baitfish look like underwater in this area - if you get the opportunity to see it - go, well worth it...
How long ago did Ray pass away? |
"Thanks all’ I new a fellow up my way who was a legendary Fly tier buy the name of "Ray". Thought they may be one in the same!
Salt, I do not do Fly’s any more! Too much work, Making and Casting. Ever since some one put WOOD/and/WIRE in my hands, I have been addicted to it like a "Crack addict" Later all!cool: |
