new DMF guy is on the case

DMF guy putting some heat on the bass guys using scup out here...boats were seen scattering the area full throttle while dumping their scup overboard as he boarded the first boat in the fleet. I think the fine is 100 or 150/scup < 10.5". Lots of guys POed about it..I heard he naided a few guys.

He's not making any friends.
But its his job.

Iwannakeeper 07-14-2005 10:41 AM

Good for him - if it is illegal they are getting what they deserve

likwid 07-14-2005 10:43 AM

xactly keeper.
im happy to see someone taking their job seriously and not just being a slack bastard.

Mr. Sandman 07-14-2005 10:52 AM

Me too actually, in today’s paper there is mention of him nabbing some kids taking short fluke off the jetty. IMO he was forgiving with the amount of the fine...http://www.mvtimes.com/news/07142005/gone_fishin.html Also he was at the dock watching over things when the comm guys pulled in..
The guy is doing his job!

I do think however that he is asked to enforce some bonehead laws. The 10.5 in scup law with an Aug 31 rec season closure just goes to show you how out of touch the DMF is when it comes to the fish. It was just a year or two ago when the rec limit was 100+ I think per man. Now there is a seasonal closure? IMO if they knew what they were really doing, it should NEVER have to come to such draconian measures as seasonal closures and big size limits. Herring, bunker, cod, Atlantic halibut, winter flounder and our beloved striped bass are all solid examples of where the DMF has opted for greed to the point of near extinction instead of throttling the comm and rec industries to sustainable limits.
That said, my hat is off to the DMF guy who IS indeed doing his job.

First offense while he's been on the job.

I like this guy, he's fair. :claps:

Fish On 07-14-2005 02:27 PM

Is that your boy Jim with the 6.4 pounder and your wife with the 5.5? Congrats!

Where's the Sandman fish?

Mr. Sandman 07-14-2005 03:40 PM

FO :

The captain rarely gets to wet a line on my boat....Between the bluefish, dogfish, bait, tangles and boat positioning details it is hard to find time to actually fish myself. I actaully got mad at my crew because I didn't get to fish and forced them to unhook their own spiny dogfish and untangle their own lines. I did manage a few fish but nothing that made the board. The kids and wife won a ton of good stuff (most of which I could use :hee: )

That is why I go fishing by myslef a lot...so I actually get to fish. :hee: (like tonight :ss: )

Sandy,
Re:"The 10.5 in scup law with an Aug 31 rec season closure just goes to show you how out of touch the DMF is when it comes to the fish"

It was an ASMFC mandate, all the DMF could do was pick the season, i.e. start May 1st and close Aug. 31st or open July 1st and go to Oct 31st.

Mr. Sandman 07-14-2005 04:13 PM

MM, whatever. Then ASMFC are out of touch. My point was that if they were in touch then prior limits of 100+ fish per man were perhaps too high for the last few years. No rec needs limits that high on any fish. 10 fish per DAY is still 70 fish per week. That is more then any family can consume. Does anyone need 700 scup per week for rec fishing? what is the point? and to "fix" their mistake, they create unenforceable size and season rules...unreal. Keep it simple and straight forward, it is not that hard. Again, I feel all fishery management are out of touch with reality. They don't act rationally and then are forced to move to the extreme.

Everytime I see a trawler or netter in a sound or bay it outright sickens me. IMO there is absolutely no need for this kind of fishing.

macojoe 07-16-2005 02:54 PM

comercial scup for rod and reel is 100 pound a day right now and it goes 400 pounds as of Aug 1st with 9 inches as the limt.

Recreational guys taking it in the a$$ There are some big Scup out there right now
