Had a blast today on 17-20+ schoolie bluefin tuna with Capt Eric Thomas (also a fellow co-worker in his real job :hihi: ). Not a charter, just we kept talking about going after them and finally went...

I got 4 or 5 and same for Eric, all 17-20+ pounds and all on topwater :humpty: ...

Now I started off with a plastic pencil and nailed a nice one and more then started trying some bass lures for grins and giggles. So I wanted to see if some sponsors wooden bass lures would catch. Pics will go up later.

I got 2 on an Afterhours Squid (had 1 come unglued on a AH Spookster and then caught tow bluefish at the same time on the one plug :rocketem: )

1 on a #^&#^&#^&#^&#^&#^&#^&#^&#^&#^&#^& Big Bart

Had a few whacks on a Bernzy needle - but really wish I had not left my
Surf Howdys at home - they would have cleaned up :D .

Fresh , never been frozen tuna , on the grill , is the best eating fish in the world.

Sounds like a great trip John. Is it true that when you hook a tuna it justs rolls on its side and floats to the top so you can reel it in??? :)

Zacs man, I love BFT, especially when it is super fresh but nothing IMHO compares to Bigeye tuna fresh, seared on the grill....

I assume these fight like heck, true? I always thought tuna was trolling and that did not interest me, if this si plugging I am in. How long does the season last?
I would love to go on a charter for these, I need a break on the open water. If anyone is interested, please pm me......

Jimmy, even trolling they are fun... the first run the make RUINS me from bass fishing for a few days, takes my head right out of bassin....

Im just not big on the sitting and waiting while trolling, I like to plug.

I'm serious about the charter, there are a few 6hr slots open and it would be a good deal to split with someone else...
My wife is a tuna nut, loves to eat them so that will be the bargaining point for me

Kevin .the new owner of Edwards Bait and Tackle in Newport , told me today that a guy came in and grabbed a bunch of pencil poppers and said he was getting the BFT on Point Jude tins and pencil poppers . Joe at Riverside Marine in Tiverton also showed me a 19 lb tuna pic caught with the small 1.5 oz. Point Jude Butterfish, which I was very happy to hear! :happy:

Close, what they typically did was burn off 80 yards or so of 60 pound braid on a VS250 twice, make a few laps around the boat, rip another 60 yards sounding down to the bottom where they would lie on their side taking their own damn time coming back to the surface and to the boat. Then they would be docile until they saw the hull and peeled off another 40 or so in the final run...

RIJimmy - I'm not one for trolling though I would for tuna, this was PLUGGING for tuna and it was awesome. These schooled tuna would come clear out of the water and you'd get one or two cracks at them before they went down. But when you hit one :drool:

I would highly recommend talking to Eric if you wanted to do it and get someone to go with you. These fish probably won't be here for long and sometime next week (even tomorrow, who knows) they could easily be up in Falmouth or Middleground... He has openings for Sunday and Monday that I am aware of...

They liked the squid - I was able to get clear across the schools and rip it thru... :drool:

A few guys have got them from shore at green hill beach and the east wall! Be carefull you dont get spooled! From what I hear, hopkins and castmasters are getting hits

Juts remeber, not matter how much ou pay for the charter you can only keep one of them.

Everything is working at the moment if you present it right; we got pictures the past few days of tuna with Point Jude tins as well as Beachmaster Atom Jr's in their mouths. They're definitely into topwaters right now though, to the point of ignoring metal at times. They'd demolish a Howdy almost the moment it touched the water.

The right guide definitely matters for these things though, it'll make the difference between getting lucky and catching one, or catching so many your arms hurt.

For reference, a lot of them have had larger bait in their bellies; half-beaks, squid, and other larger tough to identify stuff. Not sure if they're finding that bait inshore or what. Only a few have been full of peanut bunker. Think big with your offerings...

They are a blast. I haven't seen any major surface action like that here. Blind trolling with small deep diver plugs have been taking them mixed with bones. I hope that body of fish off RI is moving east....fast.

We went again yesterday, no hookups but many ft balls, small, med, and large, they were everywhere yesterday but were very picky. Some times those nice days are for fisherman, but not for fish.

If anyone wants to take a shot at them with us, let me know, maybe we can work out a price a little cheaper for guys on the site. :faga:

The bass bit has been slow lately here in Boston Haba so I would rather chase tunaaaaaaaaaaaas!!!!!
