Cabela's Coming To CT.

Today's Hartford Courant reports with a Cabela's spokeman a 200,000 square foot superstore is planned at the former Rentschler airfield in East Hartford. Will take about a year to build and would employ about 450 workers and would have a musesum, aquarium, restaurant and other features. Certainly will put the last of the little guys out of business, hopefully they gear to both the freshwater and saltwater fishing here in the northeast.

Not likely. The "little guy" provides goods and services no superstore will ever be able to provide.

This is fantastic news. Now I can stop by when I'm driving through on business and drop off the 4,000 pounds of paper catalogs I get every year :walk:

+ can walk through store and ogle everything in person

- now have to pay CT sales tax. Guess larger ticket items go to bass pro shops. :(

the aquarium

is as important for educational purpouses as is the availability of
tackle....but whether its cabelas or #^&#^&#^&#^&s...they dont give the personalized service the small shops do. I just think its a good stab in petas back and very much needed they way it will promote hunting and fishing

Ive been to both a Cabelas and a Bass Pro, they are great stores no doubt. But like it was said before you dont ge the service you get at a small shop. Cant really see b'sing with the sales clerk at cabelas. They are good to shop around in and see whats new, but can ya really see them having an Afterhours spook, a dozen eels and the ability to fix your abu on the spot, within like 5 minutes. They will do well im sure, but there are too many reasons to list to shop at the local level.

Give me the M & D's, the Belson's B & T, Blackbeards and Nelsons and all the rest.......one trip a year to the big places is fine but the small shop gets all my dough cause they care! :)

Rockport24 08-12-2005 10:02 AM

Yeah, Cabela's may be fine for a large rod and reel selection and maybe some other goodies like waders and such, but you can't beat the really good B&T's out there for their selection of plugs and overall service.

but I would still love to go to a Cabela's store just to see it.

I love to go and look at all the gear and take advantage of the superstore's ability to offer low prices. BUT... I wonder how many smaller shops will become extinct with the arrival of Cabelas in New England. I know the world has got to change, it's just a shame when the smaller guys can't compete anymore.

I really don't think a Cabelas would carry the kind and quality of stuff most guy's look for like your B&T stores carry. For the novice, I could see where the big stores could take away the business.

partsjay 08-12-2005 05:45 PM

No question that they do not provide the service of the small stores.....but I still read my cabelas catalog like its a book....plus they have all those awesome mounts to check out.
