My big bass
http://i11.photobucket.com/albums/a1...ittingbass.jpg
This fish was taken in the shadow of Nobska light in and around the boulders at the base, by boat. The tide was on its way up, it was/is close to the full/"grass?" moon on a live eel/Cape-Cod-Hawg, so named for the larger eels I get down the cape as opposed to the ones in Northeastern MA. As usual, I was using a 6/0 Gama octo, not circle, to a 25lb floro-B/B Spro to 16lb Ande, 7ft light PennSlammer/6500SS. I'm usually alone when I fish at night, it kind of makes it easier for me to sneak up on the fishies and I believe that making no noise is my secret to success when boat fishing. As I almost always fish at night and have been reading posts regarding Floro and its high price, not to mention at night it is dark (der!) does it make sense to go with floro at night as the stuff is $$$. Also, I have been trying 40lb leader material and had, between two of us, 6 knot failures due to us not being able to properly seat the knots, so I'm thinking of going back down to the 25 I was using, I had not one failure with 25, just that the fish were taking us around the stones and breaking off, granted we haven't lost a fish to the stones with the 40lb, we have lost them b/c of the knots. I know it is probably a rigging/tying error but anyone have any thoughts on this? |
If you are you are fishing around dense boulders 25lb leader is too light. When I fish around the rocks in rhody it is nothing lighter than 50lb and I know a few people that wil use up to 80lb. I usually just tie leaders with a 80lb or 125lb spro power swivel.

Nice fish and weclome!

Practice the improved albright knot. I use 40# braid with a 50# flouro leader and haven't had any problems. Here's an animation of how it's done if you don't know it.
