From Greymouth New Zealand.

Businessman Michael Hayes was fishing off the west coast of New Zealand last week when he hooked into the big fish. The catch was caught on tape.

It took five people to get the tuna on the boat. The fish weighed in at 591 pounds.

Hayes is waiting for the results of a DNA test to confirm that the fish is a Pacific bluefin tuna. If it is, it would be a new International Game Fish Association record.

"I didn't realize it was so big until we tried to get it ... on the boat," Hayes said. "Five of us couldn't even hardly move it."

Hayes said a cast is being made of the fish for his fishing club.

The monster took two hours to land.

A justice of the peace witnessed the weighing of the fish and the fact that certified scales were used.

why is it a record?

I think the record is for PACIFIC bluefin.

RIROCKHOUND 08-23-2005 02:05 PM

Yup; you need DNA to tell the different BFT's apart..
Am I seeing things, or did they bandage the head after they gaffed it? (presumably to save weight)

Thats not a bandage, it's a nicotine patch :bl:

Pacific Blue fins don't get nearly as big as their Atlantic cousins.
