Quantum Boca-Cabo
 

Anyone use these? I need a spinning reel to work sluggos I dont want a van stall as I dont use that much to justify the expense. I am hearing nothing but good things about these Quantum reels !

I cannot get the speed I need with conventional to work the sluggo the way I want.

What rod you gonna be using for that Bill?

I have the rod mike. Its a 9ft one piece GLoomis 15-25lb 1/2 to 3oz..Vey nice rod. ist the surf series. Oh Ya, fast action tip

I asked about these reels last year and was told by a couple guys on this Board that they were great except for 1 flaw -- weak bail mechanisms. They said the bails snapped closed on casts way too often, leading to lost plugs.

No good for a sluggo reel where you may snap casts a little more.

I'm not sure if Quantum fixed the problem.

Nah, I will always toss eels But once in awhile I like to toss the sluggo, recently I have had very good luck with them and my confidence with them is building. When you look at them in the water man, they do look like an eel they come right to life, its the best artificial I have ever used. Tonight I rigged up a bunch !

I can fish them with casting tackle but its a lot of work, I have to keep the rod sideways ( for the way I fish them) I go faster than the pumping rythem of a rigged eel, which by the way I am going to start fishing again.

But I can honestly say, this past week I have caught as many bass on the sluggo as I have caught on the live eels, including a 28lb fish friday night. So , they have peaked my interest. Steve fishes them all the time and I have been resistant to get away from my eels but once I tried it I said "ok these things work" One thing Steve does that he does not mention in his on the water article , is that he sprays his sluggo every other cast with bunker oil...

He buys it in bulk and transferes it to a small spray bottle to carry with him and, it works

Is it necessary to rig them with 2 hooks?
You would think the one in the front would be good enough and less likely to snag. One hook works fine in the head of an eel. Not disagreeing, just curious on your reason for 2 hooks. Sell it too me...Eels are getting tooooo expensive. :devil2: I am going to try Sluggo's next time out, if I can find some somewhere...

I think I have the same rod in conventional ;) Mike CC wrapped it for me a few years ago, when Loomis still sold blanks.

My wife uses a Stradic 8000 on her 1088. Feels pretty solid. I "borrowed" her rod a few times ;)

I have an All Star 1088 spinning rod and I use a Penn Slammer 560 on it.

Just the reason you stated, its not a "live eel" its an artifcial, the rear hook helps out alot with those short hits, you will miss less fish, I guess its just more insurance you will hook your fish, they really hit them hard.

Go to the takle box on west shore road , he has plenty, buy the black color ones, as for the weights, I think the sluggo insert weights are much better than a nail becasue they have little ribs on them that bite into the sluggo and keep them in place, but, a nail will work in a pinch. Quaker lane has everything you need, sluggos, weights, dacron etc..

I will stop by your house tommorow and show you some I have rigged and give you some better tips, you going to be around most of the day?

I am telling you dave, I think ( and I hate to admit this) they work as well as a live eel at times.......

I'll second that, but I think its a 460 slammer if its like the one I have, unless they make a 450 now too. I have a couple ahab 12's if you can get your hands on them, they are the best IMO.

i have that same rod and like it for throwing slugs, but i have it paired wiht a 704. not exactly the best match but it works for me. i like to hold the rod above the reel seat with the butt against my fore-arm and work it almost like you would a rubber worm for freshwater bass...

That is also the cost of each sluggo with tax and not including the weights and hooks.

i got's three of them . all work great except for the handle they could break . repl 1 already, got a whole box full of junk dia-junks . shshsi$%manos . and crap bu's - what does this tell ya .Hmmm

I can't say enough good things about the Shimano Spheros.I've had the 8000 for two seasons without a hint of a problem.Best reel out there in its price range IMO.

I have had a cabo 50 since the spring that I bought at m&d's.This has happened maybe twice the first week I had it,but only when trying to over throw.The reel is affordable quality,I absolutely love it.Also before casting I make sure I don't go past the rod with the line roller.I keep it just before the rod as oposed to straight up.the bail isn't weak it's magnetic(no spring) so it will never fail.My 2 centavos

The reel is pretty nice for the price. The drag is like buttery smooth, not too heavy, works braid nicely. I give it a 9 outa 10.

i;ll tell ya i gave the pt60 a good test today . held up great no flyin parts. all large as well.

Got two each Boca Pt 60 and 40's. I have to say, I feel they are good reels. The issue with the bail closing I have not experienced. All of these reels get used alot by myself and clients
The only negative I can mention and this is not a function of the reel, when I purchased these reels I was told if there were any issues at all in the first year of use, they would be replaced. No questions asked. A new reel would be taken off the shelf. So as the story goes, a client slipped and used the bail to grab and broke the bail. Its been over four weeks since I returned the reel. I'm not sure what the issue is. To be fair about the whole thing, it was due to an accident.
The graphite bail is advertised to be more flexible than a metal bail. Not sure how this will hold up over time.
The drag is great, I'm told it is sealed. Its certaily smooth. All four of these reels get a constant soaking of water on the boat. Never once had the drag slip.
As for making a decision for the Boca over the Cabo, its a matter of bucks. I was told the Cabo had some better metalurgy, the basic reels are similar.

OK -- Clue me in on how you weight the slugo. nail? slugo weight? Just curious as I am a live eel user and cannot afford the damn things with the price of gas.

Pick up the latest issue of On the Water. Steve Mc Kenna who invented the double hook loading of the Sluggo, has a complete article opn how to do it.

Joe Lyons also has sluggo instructions and all the parts for purchase...

that's it broke another handle today , oh yes still got the fish . as for the bail flip it manually , i suppose overuse is the culprit.?
