Fishing from a boat? tips

I went out for the first time in my boat on sunday for blues and bass. Did not have to much luck though. I would appreciate any tips or tricks that anyone has to help. I was chunking but did not have any luck. However got one bass off a umbrella rig while trolling.

thank you
donald

Where are you fishing? What size boat? This time of year you can usually find the blues just off shore working bait at the surface and cast to them. Surface poppers and metal, like kastmasters. The bass are starting to congrigate in the bays and are going for soft plastics. You can usually find them by the cloud of birds over them.

I launched from hampton ,nh. I have a 17 foot pro line with a 90 on it. I was considering trying out by the race on the cape. I have had a lot of luck surf casting off of race point.
