Drift fishing
Guys, I've been fishing out by the Maritime Academy on early mornings. There have been some good blitzes lately. Problem is I don't really know the proper ettiquette when fishing in conditions like this. It seems there are a ton of boats running and gunning towards the schools and it pushes the fish down. For example, Labor Day we were out there around 5:45 just before light. The fish were busting, we were catching, then all of a sudden 3 other boats show up and motor into the fish. The fish scatter, and then reappear elsewhere and the cycle continues. What is the proper way to fish in conditions like this? I feel like I am missing out on the fish becase I refuse to gun into the fish where as others seem to not care. Thoughts?

:rocketem: Nuke the bastages. Run and gun is for nitwits who really don't know how to fish a breaking school properly. I have been known to let loose with some pretty well versed langauge on those occasions.I occasionally impress myself with the stringing of various obscenities that usually don't work well together with the body parts I also mention. I may not get the clowns to stop but like primal scream therapy I do feel a little better. :hihi:

You are right they are wrong it's the solution to the problem that presents the most difficulty... :fishslap:

There's a reason people learn how to CAST to fish.......these bozo's obviously haven't learned that.
These guys haven't figured it out that if you don't scatter the fish you'll probably catch 10 times as much. Use the BF method of teaching Fishing Etiquette.....a 4 oz. hopkins across their bow :D But make sure your bigger than them....:D |
Give them fair warning and then let them have it!!
If the boater keeps passing you by, and is within casting range i suggest the following.
1) Put on a 3-4 Oz.Cripple Herring or sinker, cast it over the boat and reel it in quickly so it tumbles right over the rear end of the boat. That should get their attention, and if it dosen't. 2) Yell as loud as you can, The Next one will be thrown at the waterline of your boat a$$hole!!! That should resolve any problems you may be having at the canal.. |
You could play really bad, loud dance music and wear speedos while fishing. That would keep people away. :hihi:

Are you fishing from boat or shore ? When I'm fishing the ditch and boats scream though a school of busting fish I voice my opinion of them, my voice carries quite well over water & when I'm im my boat traveling through the ditch and see busting fish I crawl and try to go with the current or move away when possible. I'm not in the ditch that often with my boat .
While out at sea and come up on blitzing fish I try to gauge there movement and set up to let them come to me or idle in near the blitz. Yes I do chase blitzing fish when they dissapear but never crash in or through a blitz when other boats are on them first. I have made mistakes but learned from them . Link Sr. |
Took my niece (7) and her lil cousin (6) out this weekend to fish for a couple hours. They got lil stuff breaking out in front of them so I get their lines out(the casting accuracy thing is still being worked on by the kids). And they're WICKED excited. Some TOOL comes and casts DIRECTLY over them!!! and tangles them up. I totally forgot myself for the next 5 minutes as I raged at this moron I stopped myself when I looked over at the kids and they were wicked sad..then I grrr I was ready to go with this guy... Then the dude taunts me and I was ready for it.. I calmed down a bit and told the dude look man they;re just lil kids no need to cast over them, thats all. Its not like you didnt see the kids holding their rods there, and Im sure you saw the lil fish breakin in front of them. I was soo pissed man who does that to lil kids? I totally blasted the guy with some verbage that man I think a few folks learned a few new 4 letter words that day...
I got the kids to relax and got their lines back in the water and the dude comes over and says he's sorry etc etc, but I mean c'mon who casts directly over a 6 yr old and a 7yr old. Hell if it was me he was casting over I wouldnt care, Id just cut his line. Not acceptable, what kills me is that the kids saw me act that way  But you guys know Im not the type to keep quite when I dont like something thats going on. |
Thanks guys. Most of the boats were fine, but a couple were going right through the schools. Link Sr. we fish from a boat, basically I'll do the same thing as you said, start up current, put the engine in idle, and drift towards the fish. I figure if the boat drifts into the blitz, it won't really spook them as long as the prop isn't turning. One boat really pissed me off, they weren't fishing, just out cruising and must have seen the busting fish and wanted a closer look. No regard for fisherman. Oh well, I guess that's what happens on the weekends when everyone is out there.
Bass babe, you do not want to see me in speedos, you won'tbe able to control yourself. |
do's and dont's
Jaywalker33, don't ever use anything that you'll miss when casting at some putz driving your fish down. Don't a 3 1/2 oz. cripple herring that cost $5.99, do use lead sinkers that basically cost nada. Always use four ounze pyramid sinkers. They deflect the wind the best for this particular situation. I have hit more than one boat that either drove fish down in front of me or actually anchored up, such as the day tripper at the gut on Chappy that was so close I could almost flycast into his cockpit. Someone gets a sinker hitting thier boat they'll leave. Even during the derby boats will drift by but for the most part no one ever anchors up in front of you especially when their 50 to 70 guys fishing the shore on the inside.
They are not suppose to be fishing within the confines of the canal anyway. The canal cops are right next to where your fishing. Drop a dime or whiz four ounzes of lead by or through them. |
what about the yahoo's that trolls for the fish while your in the school. u guys must seen some of them hardcore fishermen. yeah, and u think run and gun is bad, can't beat them find your own school to fish. ur blood pressure will thank you later.

buy a box of cheeseits,
toss some in water and motor away the turns slam them things good the boats slam the fish I use to love doing this around MV from my boat :hihi: |
Tape a M-80 to a sinker low enough in weight so as to not sink the bouyant M-80, keep in mind that the thick green wicks are somewhat waterproof. That should scare them off?
