im scared
 

about to go get my over sand permit..either today or tommorow...
im scared of driving on the beach...should i be?

ive got a blazer..ive got the pressure gadge, tow strap, jack, jack support, shovel..rods, reels, PLUGS...anything else i might need?
tips? tricks? funny stories?

Just use your head and go easy, you'll be fine. Go out in the daylight first untill you get the hang of it.
Have a blast.

We always throw in a jug of water in case it overheats...

Sounds like you have it covered. I did my first trip out with no experience. Just air down and have fun. Kind of like driving on marshmallow fluff :)

Last year was my first year with an oversand pass. It feels a little odd the first time you are driving on the sand in the middle of the night. I found my self changing spots on the beach more than I should have because it was so much easier to move around. Like others said just use your head.

Blazers go real good on the sand. Don't even think about not airing down.

I would suggest you bring a board or two to wedge in front of your tires in case you get stuck in the sand. Also, look out for teenagers. They're something to be scared about, the way they speed and don't pay attention. (And yes, I'm sure there are some old people who do the same thing and not all teenagers do...but this is what I've seen, gimme a break on the PC stuff)

Good article re "sand driving" in last week's Fisherman magazine, you may want to pick it up......

18 lb's for air down max..go 12 if soft.

4 low if you have it.

anyone coming OFF the beach has the right of way..pull off the track or in some case's back up till you find some side room when it comes to driven on a single lane in any dune's.

NO sharp u's..you can roll a tire off the rim.then you'll break your leg tryin to kick yourself in the butt.

Full tank of gas and drive as straight as possible. Turning sharp corners could possibly dig you in. Have fun and watch out for sleeping bags on the beach and the incoming tide.

One of the things to keep in mind is you actually steer much less than you would normally. THe ruts in the sand kinda of guide you almost like auto pilot. :walk:

anyway watch your tides and plan accordingly..always keep your vehicle above the high water mark...... I think we have all seen someone stuck at one point or another becuse they "THOUGHT" they knew what they were doing!!!!!

Have: tide charts, first aid kit, extra fuses!!, flashlight, flat repair kit.

Not a must have but it kinda makes it a bit easier for ya: pep boys sells a valve stem puller its like 99 cents. On the oppisite of the the valve stem puller its got two holes, you can just screw that on to air down, so you dont have to be hunched over the whole time. There are also commercial deflators out there oasis n such but you cant beat the .99 cent ones imho. Just keep an eye on the tire and when you see the bottom begin to bulge out a bit take your pressure. Mine take 17 seconds a piece to get down to 12-15 psi that way. :bgi:

Some other things that are handy to have---fire extinguisher (we had an SUV burn here on LI this year), a roll of duct tape and a can of WD-40. The last two have multiple uses. Including covering over your back-up lights if you like to back up to a fishing spot at night ;)

yup mac, parker river refuge. ive explored basically the entire shoreline up there from river to river,walking.do you remember that huge olive pencil you gave me? it works there.

A lot of good info, but most of all air down big time,soft sand = 12 pos
stay in the tracks/groves/ and you will be fine.
below the high tide line you can sink stay way above it. I found out the hard way my first time. :) And bring a phone with ya !

well, that was AWSOME
i went down to 13ish psi
popped it into 4 low
took a nice drive on the beach, fished a while, caught nothing,
took chrisl's advice and cranked some maiden
no problems at all
got to play with some of gonefishing's plugs, very nice.
cant wait till i get some fish this way :bl:

P-Town requires 11 psi and if you get stuck and they see you they will inforce it. By the way I go down to 10PSI all the time or less.

FIRE EXTINGUISHER.19 dollars can save ur vehicle.

use 4 high :)

another item is a high powered flashlite or lantern and extrea batteries, changing a tire with good lite is much easier than in the dark.

Go slow no sharp turns. You'll be fine, before long you'll feel like a pro.
A sharp knife is good ( had some fishing line blow into my axle once, had to cut it out) the shovel, board, and cell phone ( in the old days a CB radio) .

yep, low on your vehicle is for when your in trouble.
Mr. Sams is right on what he runs/ran I used to run low range/second gear when I had a real truck too :D.. but, small rig like yours high range, AOD off, 10 pounds of air, you will go anywhere.
Fire exting, assorted tools, good light, all good stuff.

AND fa god's sake don't run the beach at nite with ya light's on..ground's fa getting shot at.

YA Karl....4 low.track's...get out and let the truck go by itself down the beach without u in it...use to tie a rope to the mirror and walk my truck...people wood look and say wth???..I'd look at them and say nice day for a walk.
